Vielschichtige Perspektiven & Erfahrungen Neben Inputs zu zentralen Themen rund um partizipative Projektarbeit lebt der CAS von den vielschichtigen Perspektiven und Erfahrungen der Teilnehmenden. Diese kommen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen: zum Beispiel aus der Forschung, Museen, Bibliotheken, Archiven, NGOs, der Verwaltung oder dem Gesundheitsbereich. So vielfältig diese Zielgruppe auf den ersten Blick sein mag, sie eint das Interesse an der Umsetzung partizipativer Projekte, an gemeinsamer Wissensproduktion und dem Einbezug der Bevölkerung. Genau in dieser Kombination aus Unterschieden und Gemeinsamkeiten der CAS-Teilnehmenden sehen wir eine grosse Chance für das Von- und Miteinander-Lernen und für die Vernetzung mit Gleichgesinnten, die sich in ganz anderen institutionellen Umgebungen bewegen und zu den verschiedensten Themen arbeiten.

Online workshop: Common Challenges in Citizen Science
Scivil (Scivil.be) is bringing together citizen science actors to exchange experiences, succes stories and challenges in an online workshop. The workshop is aimed at citizen science project initiators and coordinators and will be guided by Stickydot (stickydot.eu/). Citizen Science ist (nicht nur) in Deutschland den Kinderschuhen entwachsen und wir möchten das Forum Citizen Science 2021 als Denk- und Reflexionsraum anbieten, um über Wirkungen von Citizen Science als Antrieb von Veränderung zu diskutieren: Setzt Citizen Science das Potenzial um, Vertrauen zwischen Wissensschaffenden mit unterschiedlicher Expertise aufzubauen? Welche Wirkung hat Citizen Science in den letzten Jahren in Wissenschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft? Wie lässt sich diese Wirkung überhaupt erfassen? Welchen Wandel kann Citizen Science herbeiführen? Wo gibt es neue Felder für Citizen Science und wo ist der Forschungsansatz bereits gut etabliert? Citizen science: an approach to promote Planetary Health - 2021 PHAM
We live today in a risky society, which imposes on the current and future generations the need to know how to deal with uncertainties and the complexities of the environmental, social, political and economic systems that lead to the threat to the continuity of the human species on the planet. These uncertainties can directly affect individual and collective health, making it imperative that individuals understand the causes and consequences of global changes so that they can not only reflect, but also act individually and demand action from their representatives in the government based on that understanding and on evidence. Citizen science offers the opportunity for social participation in the generation of scientific knowledge and, at the same time, can empower individuals towards change. Um der Gesellschaft zu nutzen statt zu schaden, muss sich die Forschung und Entwicklung Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) an den Bedürfnissen der Menschen orientieren. Aber wie können Bürger:innen den Wissenschaftler:innen helfen, neue Forschungsthemen zu einem komplexen Bereich wie KI zu finden? Wir möchten gemeinsam mit Ihnen ein Beteiligungsformat erproben, welches interessierten Laien hilft, ihre Ansichten und Einstellungen zum Thema KI so strukturiert zu formulieren, dass sie von Wissenschaftler:innen und politischen Entscheidungsträger:innen gehört und verstanden werden. Während des Workshops werden wir gemeinsam mit Ihnen einen Chatbot ausprobieren, der Sie dabei unterstützt, Ihre Anliegen an die Wissenschaft loszuwerden. Des Weiteren werden wir eine interaktive Wissenskarte vorstellen, in der alle Bürgerbeiträge gruppiert dargestellt werden und von Experten kommentiert und eingeordnet werden können. Österreich forscht and the NestCams project of the Konrad Lorenz Research Center invite you to the Citizen Science Online Pub Quiz. We are once again guessing with lots of science and fun, and also according to the strictest corona rules, namely purely online! Lessons and insights from WeObserve
WeObserve tackles three key challenges that citizens observatories face: (1) awareness, (2) acceptability and (3) sustainability. Its overall mission is to create a sustainable ecosystem of citizen observatories that can systematically address these identified challenges and help move citizen science into the mainstream. As the project draws to its conclusion, team members will highlight what the project has learnt through its activities. Policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies
In view of the upcoming legislative proposal on ΑΙ and its ethical aspects, the event will seek to identify which issues and challenges of AI are in need of particular attention. It will also discuss ways to address those challenges and build on what was learned through the AI debate to better prepare for the next wave of scientific and technological advances, and ensure that these are beneficial to society and their risks are addressed early. Three major EU-funded projects, SIENNA, SHERPA and PANELFIT, representing a €10m investment in research from the European Commission to develop governance structures sensitive to ethical and human rights concerns in relation to emerging technologies, are coming together to discuss their findings and provide the context for a discussion on the policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies. Citizen Science in der Verhaltensbiologie: das Projekt NestCams als Fallbeispiel
Wir freuen uns den ersten Vortrag unserer Vortragsreihe zu Citizen Science im Sommersemester 2021 präsentieren zu dürfen. Referent: Dr. Didone Frigerio (Konrad Lorenz Forschungsstelle, einer Core Facility der Universität Wien mit Sitz in Oberösterreich) Zusammenfassung: Der Fortpflanzungserfolg eines Individuums kann als direktes Maß für seine biologische Fitness betrachtet werden und gibt Aufschluss über die Anpassungsfähigkeit einer Art. An der Konrad Lorenz Forschungsstelle (einer Core Facility der Universität Wien mit Sitz in Oberösterreich) sind wir daran interessiert, die Zusammenhänge zwischen Brutverhalten und Bruterfolg zu untersuchen. Wir erforschen das an zwei Vogelarten: den langzeit-monogamen Graugänsen, und den saisonal-monogamen Waldrappen. Dafür haben wir mehrere Nistplätze mit Videokameras ausgestattet, die das Verhalten der Brutvögel aufzeichnen. Daraus sind große Datenmengen resultiert, welche wir nur mit kräftiger Unterstützung bewältigen können. Der Vortrag beleuchtet die Schwerpunkte des Projektes und die Vor- und Nachteile von online Plattformen für Citizen Science Ansätze.
PANELFIT Online Webinar: Data protection in journalism: practical tools
The European legal framework on personal data protection is constantly evolving and the issue of citizens’ privacy is increasingly central to the public debate. It is crucial for journalists to move confidently in this area, to ensure that people’s fundamental rights are respected while fully fulfilling their reporting role. During this webinar, the Practical Handbook for Journalists on Data Protection will be presented. This tool will be enriched over the coming months with the input and suggestions of journalists themselves, and will soon be available online. In a spirit of participatory development, the webinar will include an open space for questions, from which we will take inspiration to expand the Handbook. The event will be led by Iñigo De Miguel Beriain, senior researcher at the University of the Basque Country, and moderated by Federico Caruso, a collaborator of OBC Transeuropa. Monitoring groundwater in Limpopo Province through citizen science
On 2 March 2021 (11:00-12:00 CET), Jaqui Goldin, from the Centre for UNESCO Groundwater, will present the latest findings from a groundwater-monitoring citizen science project based in the Hout Catchment, Limpopo Province – one of the poorest provinces in South Africa. In this project, citizen scientists capture data on groundwater levels and rainfall, putting it onto a smartphone from where it is uploaded to the web. The data is then available to the Department of Water and Sanitation, and others, who are otherwise unable to access groundwater information in remote wells. After the presentation, Jaqui will answer questions about the project. Attendance is free, and the event will be held in English.
Discovering the unexplored deep marine environment
Deep underwater neutrino telescopes as KM3NeT measure neutrino and environmental events that constitute “noise” for the neutrino searches. These environmental events range from biological bioluminescence to acoustic signals from sea mammals. Citizens can support KM3NeTs scientists to increase the efficiency in the neutrino detection algorithms, providing input that will be crucial for two scientific tasks: the classification of noise types, and the identification of the frequency range and typical length of noise signals. The output of the citizen science activity will serve as a basis for training machine learning algorithms, which will automatically identify and classify the noise sources, thus monitoring the noise with an unprecedented detail. At the same time, citizens will have the opportunity to gain a greater insight of the unexplored deep marine environment. In the framework of REINFORCE, time sequences of the optical counting rates on the KM3NeT “eyes” will be made available to the general public in order to monitor ambient bioluminescence, and citizens will be invited to classify in a systematic way the various types of waveforms observed. Furthermore, in order to involve in this activity also visually-impaired citizen scientists, the “ears” of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope will also be exploited by utilising the time sequences of the acoustical signals detected. Both sound and visual data for the bioluminescence and the acoustic signals will be produced. The webinar aims to give an overview of the Deep Sea Hunters Large Scale Citizen Science demonstrator and how it will be implemented in order to engage citizens in the scientific research, showcasing the tasks that citizens will be asked to perform and how their input will be fundamental to explore the environment of the deep sea below 1000m depth in which humanity has little experience so far.
