Ciencia ciudadana en apoyo a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS)
[ES] El próximo 30 de septiembre, el grupo OSDG (formado por la consultora lituana PPMI, el grupo SDG AI Lab del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (UNDP) y una creciente comunidad de investigadores) junto con el Instituto INAECU (UAM-UC3M) organizará la Jornada ‘Ciencia ciudadana en apoyo a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS)‘ que se realizará de forma virtual. La jornada se articulará en tres partes. En primer lugar, una mesa introductoria que reunirá a expertos internacionales relacionados con ciencia abierta y los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible. En una segunda parte, un workshop práctico dónde se presentará el proyecto OSDG Community Platform, un proyecto de ciencia ciudadana que pretende analizar como la ciencia, la tecnología y la innovación pueden contribuir a los ODS, mediante la participación de múltiples actores. Finalmente, se realizará una breve actividad participativa entre los asistentes sobre los enfoques y los principales dilemas/desafíos para conseguir las metas establecidas en la Agenda 2030. (reflexión en pequeños grupos). 18:15-18.30 | Observaciones finales y cierre [EN] On September 30, the OSDG group (formed by PPMI, the SDG AI Lab group of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and a growing community of researchers) together with the INAECU Institute (UAM-UC3M ) will organize the Conference 'Citizen Science in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)' to be held virtually. The day will be divided into three parts. First, an introductory table that will bring together international experts related to open science and the sustainable development goals. In the second part, we will present the OSDG Community Platform projec , a citizen science project that aims to analyze how science, technology and innovation can contribute to the SDGs through participation of multiple actors. Finally, we will hold a brief participatory activity on the approaches and the main dilemmas / challenges to achieve the goals established in the 2030 Agenda. The event is free of charge, join us!

How to open up research & innovation to young people?
Young people in Europe are facing many challenges with regard to social inclusion. Social participation, employment, social belonging are important examples. There is a pressing need to develop more knowledge and innovation to create more inclusive and youth-friendly societies. One way to contribute to this is Citizen Social Science with young people - Youth Citizen Social Science (Y-CSS). We organise a series of three webinars to discuss central questions of Y-CSS and to create a network of interested people. The webinars are for practitioners of Citizen Science, Community-based Research and youth engagement. We would be happy to learn from your experience and the questions you bring. We would be particularly grateful for young researchers and youth organisations to take part. We want to learn from their work and perspectives. People without prior experience are of course also very welcome. These are exciting conversations and we are working hard to make them happen in inclusive and equitable ways. Participation in the webinars is open to everybody and free of charge.

NASA GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Photo Challenge
The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program invites citizen scientists from around the world to participate in the Mosquito Habitat Photo Challenge. This challenge combines Mosquito Habitat Mapper and Land Cover (two GLOBE Observer app tools) to document mosquito breeding habitats with photos. GLOBE would like you to take photos of mosquito habitats, in either natural or artificial containers. If mosquito larvae are present, you are encouraged to photograph them with a magnifier (optional). Then, we’d like you to take photos of the land around the habitat location using the Land Cover tool. Photos submitted during this challenge will be used to create automated classification programs that can identify mosquito larvae and the environments they prefer. Such computer programs can help prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease
Unleashing the potential of Citizen Science Data for monitoring the SDGs
Crowd4SDG Panel Discussion and Call for NSO challenges. As a Crowd4SDG project partner, UNITAR is hosting this online panel for National Statistical Offices and Systems to discuss how to leverage citizen science data using both “active” and “passive” approaches, and what quality assurance criteria to consider. The panel will present the results of the Crowd4SDG report developed with the guidance of the Advisory Group. Several National Statistical Offices and other organizations will share their experiences and work on the use of citizen science data. Following the presentation of the Crowd4SDG tools developed for citizen scientists,the event will also feature "Propose your Crowd4SDG challenge" segment in connection with a public competition to be launched later this year to develop citizen science projects that tackle climate change and gender inequality. The “BioBlitz a tutti i costi” is a free event open to everyone, to learn to recognize living species present in nature and to collect original scientific data, useful for conservation. Through the iNaturalist app, you can send photos of animal and plant species (not domestic) that you took outdoors or in one of the participating National Parks. If you can't leave home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, you can upload photos from your archives. As in a real BioBlitz (which usually lasts 24 hours and is held outdoors), the "BioBlitz a tutti i costi " will produce a list of species thanks to the collaboration between citizens and experts who will help you in identifications. You can participate from all over Italy and also enter photos taken abroad! How to use cosmic rays in the study of geosciences and archaeology
The technology developed to study fundamental physics can be applied to the development of frameworks that may have a significant impact on society. The Atmospheric Muons have unique potential to probe structures and provide insight in a series of issues, ranging from volcano live monitoring to applications in archaeology or use for non- invasive and non-destructive control processes in the industry. Muography is an innovative technique using secondary cosmic rays produced in the atmosphere, the most energetic of which have the property to cross ordinary matter over relevant distances (from meters to kilometers). The detection of those particles after any type of target allows therefore the characterization of the distribution and the density of the matter inside the target, as it is done for instance in medical imaging with X-rays. There is a strong societal impact of this technique, which is mostly passive and therefore adapted to any field of investigation: controls, risks assessment, hazards management. In the framework of REINFORCE, citizens will be provided with open data detected with distributed networks of cosmic ray detectors and will contribute in performing inquiries at the interplay between cosmic ray research and its applications. The webinar aims to give an overview of the Cosmic Muons Images Large Scale Citizen Science demonstrator and how it will be implemented in order to engage citizens in the scientific research, showcasing the tasks that citizens will be asked to perform and how their input will be fundamental to study geological phenomena and archaeology research by using Cosmic Rays. Citizen science: an approach to promote Planetary Health - 2021 PHAM
We live today in a risky society, which imposes on the current and future generations the need to know how to deal with uncertainties and the complexities of the environmental, social, political and economic systems that lead to the threat to the continuity of the human species on the planet. These uncertainties can directly affect individual and collective health, making it imperative that individuals understand the causes and consequences of global changes so that they can not only reflect, but also act individually and demand action from their representatives in the government based on that understanding and on evidence. Citizen science offers the opportunity for social participation in the generation of scientific knowledge and, at the same time, can empower individuals towards change. Referent: Dr. Didone Frigerio (Konrad Lorenz Forschungsstelle, einer Core Facility der Universität Wien mit Sitz in Oberösterreich) Zusammenfassung: Der Fortpflanzungserfolg eines Individuums kann als direktes Maß für seine biologische Fitness betrachtet werden und gibt Aufschluss über die Anpassungsfähigkeit einer Art. An der Konrad Lorenz Forschungsstelle (einer Core Facility der Universität Wien mit Sitz in Oberösterreich) sind wir daran interessiert, die Zusammenhänge zwischen Brutverhalten und Bruterfolg zu untersuchen. Wir erforschen das an zwei Vogelarten: den langzeit-monogamen Graugänsen, und den saisonal-monogamen Waldrappen. Dafür haben wir mehrere Nistplätze mit Videokameras ausgestattet, die das Verhalten der Brutvögel aufzeichnen. Daraus sind große Datenmengen resultiert, welche wir nur mit kräftiger Unterstützung bewältigen können. Der Vortrag beleuchtet die Schwerpunkte des Projektes und die Vor- und Nachteile von online Plattformen für Citizen Science Ansätze.
CoAct Webinar: Co-Shaping Evaluation in Citizen Science?
Participatory evaluation is an approach that aims at giving voice to the stakeholders of an intervention in its evaluation design, process and results. This webinar will shed light on the specificities of this methodology, as well as challenges and opportunities related to its application in citizen science. The aim of the webinar is to furthermore provide an overview on co-evaluation as a strategy and to discuss which respective approaches and options have been available for a long time in participatory research and citizen science, how they have been received, what opportunities they have opened up, what obstacles have been overcome, but also what we can learn from them for the future.
Citizen Science in the Classroom: How Real Research is a Mechanism for Increasing Diversity in STEM
Teachers will get an introduction to citizen science, access resources to find projects that fit their curricula and go through an exercise to help integrate these projects into their classroom. Teachers will also leave with a digital toolkit that will enable them to take the lessons learned and apply them to their learning objectives in their classroom.
