Webinar: Blueprint for reducing plastic pollution in rivers through citizen science
Rivers are critical to all life on the planet. They are a source of drinking water and a vital ecosystem for many species. Clean rivers are key. In most recent years, it becomes clear that our rivers are polluted with plastics. Scientific evidence shows that these polluted rivers also contribute to the worldwide plastic pollution of our oceans. In this webinar, we will present the blueprint of our Clean Rivers project and explain how to set a project that focusses on tackling river litter pollution. The program will be interactive to share experiences, knowledge and future collaborations. The program is targeted at non-governmental organisations, policy makers and advisors at European, regional and local level, politicians, waterboards, institutes, universities and companies. Living Knowledge Online Festival
To fill in the gap in physical conferences, the Living Knowledge Network will organise an online “festival”. It is a joint effort of Groningen University and international partners. You will be able to see and hear some presentations that were originally scheduled for the physical conference. And participate in a number of workshops and live sessions. To make the best out of the situation, many presentations will be done by pre-recorded videos. This will allow you - in whatever time zone you are - to watch them when you want to and discuss them through a chat function. Video presentations will also limit connection problems we hope. During the festival, there will be a social corner to continue discussions, and we intend to organize a few thematic discussions. Like the live sessions and workshops, these will however be during European daytime only. More information will be available soon, as we’re still working on logistics. But we do hope to meet and greet all of you soon, even if it has to be online for now!
Citizen Science for Policy across Europe
EU-Citizen.Science is inviting representatives from ministries across Europe and at the regional and local levels to engage in a discussion about citizen science and its benefits for policy making. The main aim of this event is to develop collaborations among policy makers with citizen science interests. This event will be held as a satellite event of the European Research and Innovation Days on 22 June 2021.
Call for abstracts Open Track on PANDEMIC AND STS - 8th STS Conference
We warmly encourage you to send your abstracts for the following track: How to Protect Communities from Sars CoV-2 through Co-production of Health and the Design of Commons-Based Ecosystems by Adopting Distributed Ledger Technologies? The 8th STS Italia Conference will be hosted by the University of Trieste, Italy, June 17 through 19, 2021, by the Italian Society of Science and Technology Studies. It is our pleasure to announce that the calls for abstract are now open until December 18th, 2020. The conference will be an opportunity to present empirical and theoretical work from a variety of disciplines: sociology, anthropology, design, economics, history, law, philosophy, psychology and semiotics. The focal theme of the 8th STS Italia Conference will be "Dis/Entangling Technoscience: Vulnerability, Responsibility and Justice”. This broad theme refers to the complex and ambivalent role of technoscience and innovation in constituting societies – making possibilities flourish, but also creating new vulnerabilities. The conference will include 28 tracks, which are clustered into five thematic streams. The tracks focus on several topics, including: biomedicine, digital platforms and media, work and organizations, expertise and public policy, ethics of technology and innovation, and governance of science and technology at large. Abstracts (written in English, or in Italian in case of tracks in two language) should be submitted by December, 18 to the conference email address (stsitaliaconf@gmail.com) and to the emails of convenors' selected track. Track Convenor(s) will be responsible for reviewing, accepting/rejecting and organising submissions into their track. The European Green Week 2021 will be dedicated to the ‘zero pollution ambition’. It will also look at other relevant European Green Deal initiatives, such as the climate initiatives, the upcoming Chemicals Strategy, as well as initiatives in the fields of energy, industry, mobility, agriculture, fisheries, health and biodiversity. EU Green Week 2021 will be an opportunity to engage with all stakeholders and interested citizens on how we can work together to make the ambition for a zero pollution and toxic-free environment a reality.
ECSA & EU-Citizen.Science webinar: Introducing new citizen science projects launching in 2021
Our webinar on the 26th May 2021 (14.00-15.30 CEST) will highlight new citizen science projects starting in 2021, with short talks from three early career researchers: – Famke Mölenberg (she/her/hers) (Erasmus MC, Netherlands) is an epidemiologist working on SEEDS, which aims to engage teenagers from Spain, the Netherlands, Greece and the United Kingdom in their health education and science literacy by directly empowering through citizen science. She tweets as @FamkeMolenberg. – Dr Cristina Zaga (she/her/hers) (University of Twente, Netherlands) is assistant professor in human-centred design working on Incentive, which links project partners and citizen science to co-create sustainable transdisciplinary hubs for stimulating and supporting excellent citizen science and responsible research and innovation (RRI). She tweets as @Zaga_daga. – Isabelle Freiling (she/her/hers) (University of Vienna, Austria) is a communication scientist working in the YouCount project, which aims to identify positive drivers for social inclusion of youth at risk of exclusion, and cocreate innovations and policymaking using cocreative youth citizen social science. Online workshop: Common Challenges in Citizen Science
Scivil (Scivil.be) is bringing together citizen science actors to exchange experiences, succes stories and challenges in an online workshop. The workshop is aimed at citizen science project initiators and coordinators and will be guided by Stickydot (stickydot.eu/). Neues Beteiligungsformat: Wie können Bürger:innen mitgestalten, was die Wissenschaft erforscht?
Um der Gesellschaft zu nutzen statt zu schaden, muss sich die Forschung und Entwicklung Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) an den Bedürfnissen der Menschen orientieren. Aber wie können Bürger:innen den Wissenschaftler:innen helfen, neue Forschungsthemen zu einem komplexen Bereich wie KI zu finden? Wir möchten gemeinsam mit Ihnen ein Beteiligungsformat erproben, welches interessierten Laien hilft, ihre Ansichten und Einstellungen zum Thema KI so strukturiert zu formulieren, dass sie von Wissenschaftler:innen und politischen Entscheidungsträger:innen gehört und verstanden werden. Während des Workshops werden wir gemeinsam mit Ihnen einen Chatbot ausprobieren, der Sie dabei unterstützt, Ihre Anliegen an die Wissenschaft loszuwerden. Des Weiteren werden wir eine interaktive Wissenskarte vorstellen, in der alle Bürgerbeiträge gruppiert dargestellt werden und von Experten kommentiert und eingeordnet werden können. Policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies
In view of the upcoming legislative proposal on ΑΙ and its ethical aspects, the event will seek to identify which issues and challenges of AI are in need of particular attention. It will also discuss ways to address those challenges and build on what was learned through the AI debate to better prepare for the next wave of scientific and technological advances, and ensure that these are beneficial to society and their risks are addressed early. Three major EU-funded projects, SIENNA, SHERPA and PANELFIT, representing a €10m investment in research from the European Commission to develop governance structures sensitive to ethical and human rights concerns in relation to emerging technologies, are coming together to discuss their findings and provide the context for a discussion on the policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies. Referent: Dr. Didone Frigerio (Konrad Lorenz Forschungsstelle, einer Core Facility der Universität Wien mit Sitz in Oberösterreich) Zusammenfassung: Der Fortpflanzungserfolg eines Individuums kann als direktes Maß für seine biologische Fitness betrachtet werden und gibt Aufschluss über die Anpassungsfähigkeit einer Art. An der Konrad Lorenz Forschungsstelle (einer Core Facility der Universität Wien mit Sitz in Oberösterreich) sind wir daran interessiert, die Zusammenhänge zwischen Brutverhalten und Bruterfolg zu untersuchen. Wir erforschen das an zwei Vogelarten: den langzeit-monogamen Graugänsen, und den saisonal-monogamen Waldrappen. Dafür haben wir mehrere Nistplätze mit Videokameras ausgestattet, die das Verhalten der Brutvögel aufzeichnen. Daraus sind große Datenmengen resultiert, welche wir nur mit kräftiger Unterstützung bewältigen können. Der Vortrag beleuchtet die Schwerpunkte des Projektes und die Vor- und Nachteile von online Plattformen für Citizen Science Ansätze.
PANELFIT Online Webinar: Data protection in journalism: practical tools
The European legal framework on personal data protection is constantly evolving and the issue of citizens’ privacy is increasingly central to the public debate. It is crucial for journalists to move confidently in this area, to ensure that people’s fundamental rights are respected while fully fulfilling their reporting role. During this webinar, the Practical Handbook for Journalists on Data Protection will be presented. This tool will be enriched over the coming months with the input and suggestions of journalists themselves, and will soon be available online. In a spirit of participatory development, the webinar will include an open space for questions, from which we will take inspiration to expand the Handbook. The event will be led by Iñigo De Miguel Beriain, senior researcher at the University of the Basque Country, and moderated by Federico Caruso, a collaborator of OBC Transeuropa.
