How to make the best of citizen science for your research
You have heard about the term citizen science but you are not entirely sure what it means? Citizen Science for Health conference 2023
Τhe first global Citizen Science for Health conference will take place on Sunday 29 October – Wednesday 1 November 2023 at DesignLab, University of Twente, the Netherlands. The conference will be organized in close cooperation with University of Twente's TechMed Centre, as part of the MedTech Twente Week 2023. The event is initiated by the Working group Citizen Science for Health of the European Citizen Science Association ECSA. The conference takes place over four days and the scope aims to mark the start of a more concerted approach towards the development of Citizen Science in the domain of Health. The conference aims to touch both minds and hearts, and to inspire collaborations beyond paradigms. Therefore, a format is chosen that goes beyond a more traditional conference set-up. Besides scientific symposia, the conference will include a diversity of interactive formats such as: dialogues, round tables, co-creation sessions, networking, poster sessions, field visits, walking meetings and art. The conference is open to a broad global public (including academics, students, policy makers, citizens, societal organizations and companies), but also to a local audience interested in Citizen Science for Health.

Citizen science and co-design tools for cities
As part of the 2023 European Week of Regions and Cities, SOCIO-BEE will be participating in the participatory/political lab, ‘Citizen science and co-design tools for cities’, on Tuesday, 10 October 2023 at 9:30 CET in Brussels. SOCIO-BEE and nine other EU-funded projects will present the tools and resources they have developed to help communities make their cities more sustainable.
We are thrilled to announce the "ECS Co-Design Process in Action: Introducing the Updated eu-citizen.science Platform and API Training", an event set to redefine the way we view the eu-citizen.science platform. This 150-minute engagement taking place on July 27, 2023, from 12:00 - 14:30 CEST, is your gateway to understanding the next generation of citizen science.This event is uniquely split into two main sections, offering flexibility to attend one part, or both, based on your interests and needs.The first part (12:00 - 13:15 CEST) is a comprehensive exploration of the ECS Co-Design Process. With an accessible and interactive format, we will delve into the details of the updated eu-citizen.science platform. Opening with a brief presentation on the overarching ECS project, we will then focus on the Co-Design Process' first cycle results, which birthed three novel services: the Project Visualisation Map, the Improved Event Section, and the Enhanced Search Engine. Each service will be presented in detail, offering a practical understanding of their functions. We invite all attendees to contribute to an engaging discussion period where we will entertain queries, comments, and thoughts on these services, as well as our next steps. This is your chance to interact directly with our platform's architects, including members of the ECSA Platform Working Group.Following a brief intermission (13:15 - 13:30 CEST), we continue with a highly informative, practical training session (13:30 - 14:20 CEST). This workshop is designed to explain API handling concepts, providing a foundation for anyone interested in unlocking the true potential of the eu-citizen.science platform. The European Citizen Science project, which connects a rich citizen science community, wants to provide a space to exchange practical experiences in integrating and using citizen science practices in universities and to gather recommendations for the European Commission and other stakeholders in ways of supporting citizen science in the high education sector. To do so, the project is organising an online event for everyone (such as academics, educators, university staff, citizen science practitioners, early career researchers, policy makers, civil servants, general public and industry representatives) interested in learning about and discussing the role of citizen science in transforming universities in Europe. À l’École de la médiation, nous pensons que les sciences et recherches participatives ont le potentiel de valoriser l’expertise des professionnels de la médiation et de leur permettre de développer leurs compétences spécialisées liées à la facilitation et aux lieux de co-production de connaissances (living lab, fablab, boutiques des sciences etc.) Par ailleurs, organismes de recherche et lieux de cultures scientifiques ont beaucoup à tirer d’une meilleure compréhension et collaboration autour des SRP : les CCSTI pour faire évoluer leur offre, la recherche pour bénéficier de l’expertise des professionnel.les de la culture scientifique sur les relations sciences et société. Cette journée d’étude “ médiation scientifique et recherches participatives” invite les professionnels de la recherche, de la médiation, et les porteurs de projets culturels et associatifs à dégager ensemble des axes de réflexion pour mieux concevoir et envisager la médiation scientifique dans les recherches participatives, et sa complémentarité avec les intermédiations. L’objectif de cette journée est d’initier la création de groupes de travail en vue de rédiger un “livre blanc” sur le rôle de la médiation scientifique dans les nouveaux modes de production collective de la connaissance.
ECS at the Ecsite conference 2023
A representative of the ECS | European Citizen Science project will be at the Ecsite conference 2023 to talk about the opportunity it offers. ECS represents a wide diversity of stakeholders have joined forces to create the capacity, structure, and connections to widen and strengthen the European citizen science community and establish citizen science as a recognised, promoted and funded approach. The four-year EU-funded project European Citizen Science will create capacity-building opportunities, provide open collaborative spaces where citizen scientists can familiarise themselves with open science principles, engage public libraries to attract underrepresented publics, as well as provide support to countries and regions which lack citizen science networks, platforms and policy recognition.
Citizen Science has the power to deliver major change in the way the EU Green Deal objectives are delivered. If we can get just 15% of the population of Europe engaged to tackle behavioural change issues through citizen science nearly 70 million people would be driving change on issues such as air quality, climate change and sustainable lifestyles. Come and learn about the cutting-edge research that is seeking to make this possible. The event will have a speaker from the UNEP as well as presentations from 7 Green Deal Call projects on their work across the EU: AURORA, I-CHANGE, SOCIO-BEE, COMPAIR, ECF4CLIM, GreenSCENT and PSLifestyle. The event will be of particular interest to policy makers, researchers and others interested in finding out more from forefront of climate change research and innovation.
Workshop: Gedeelde uitdagingen in citizen science
Bij het opzetten van citizen science komen heel wat unieke uitdagingen kijken. Op 31 mei organiseert Scivil drie workshops om deze uitdagingen te bespreken en samen mogelijke oplossingen te bedenken. De drie parallelle workshops focussen zich op 1) musea, bibliotheken en archieven, 2) lokale besturen, 3) citizen science ondersteunen in je organisatie. Heb je nog weinig ervaring met of kennis van citizen science? Geen nood, we beginnen de namiddag met een lunchpresentatie waarin we de algemene principes en inspirerende voorbeelden uit de doeken doen.
PREP4BLUE Webinar series: Planning for Citizen Participation in Mission Ocean & Waters
PREP4BLUE is running a spring/summer webinar series titled “Planning for Citizen Participation in Mission Ocean & Waters.” Over five one-hour sessions, participants will learn how to design a project, work package, or programme of activities in alignment with the citizen engagement targets of the EU Mission: Restore Our Ocean and Waters By 2030 (or Mission Ocean). The webinars are designed as bite-sized, targeted sessions that will equip the audience with key information and knowledge of where/how to access more details or expertise. The webinar series is aimed primarily at anyone applying for Mission Ocean funding under Horizon Europe. It will also be of interest to current Mission-funded projects, as well as those working on citizen engagement in marine and freshwater-related activities across the NGO, industry, research, community, citizen science groups, and local government sectors. The European Commission’s ambition in relation to citizen engagement with Mission Ocean falls under a handful of clear themes. Each of the webinars in this series is structured around one of these themes. Overall, the series will equip the audience with the knowledge required to orient project proposals and restoration, anti-pollution, and other related activities towards the Mission’s targets in relation to citizen engagement.
