How to open up research & innovation to young people?
Young people in Europe are facing many challenges with regard to social inclusion. Social participation, employment, social belonging are important examples. There is a pressing need to develop more knowledge and innovation to create more inclusive and youth-friendly societies. One way to contribute to this is Citizen Social Science with young people - Youth Citizen Social Science (Y-CSS). We organise a series of three webinars to discuss central questions of Y-CSS and to create a network of interested people. The webinars are for practitioners of Citizen Science, Community-based Research and youth engagement. We would be happy to learn from your experience and the questions you bring. We would be particularly grateful for young researchers and youth organisations to take part. We want to learn from their work and perspectives. People without prior experience are of course also very welcome. These are exciting conversations and we are working hard to make them happen in inclusive and equitable ways. Participation in the webinars is open to everybody and free of charge.
OS Fair 2021 aims to bring together and empower open science communities and services; to identify common practices related to open science; to see what are the best synergies to deliver and operate services that work for many; and to bring experiences from all around the world and learn from each other. OSFair2021 is organised as an emblematic initiative of OpenAIRE, co-organised by key international initiatives in the area of Open Science: COAR, EIFL, Force11, LA Referencia, LIBER, OPERAS, Sparc, Sparc Europe.
Webinar: Blueprint for reducing plastic pollution in rivers through citizen science
Rivers are critical to all life on the planet. They are a source of drinking water and a vital ecosystem for many species. Clean rivers are key. In most recent years, it becomes clear that our rivers are polluted with plastics. Scientific evidence shows that these polluted rivers also contribute to the worldwide plastic pollution of our oceans. In this webinar, we will present the blueprint of our Clean Rivers project and explain how to set a project that focusses on tackling river litter pollution. The program will be interactive to share experiences, knowledge and future collaborations. The program is targeted at non-governmental organisations, policy makers and advisors at European, regional and local level, politicians, waterboards, institutes, universities and companies. Living Knowledge Online Festival
To fill in the gap in physical conferences, the Living Knowledge Network will organise an online “festival”. It is a joint effort of Groningen University and international partners. You will be able to see and hear some presentations that were originally scheduled for the physical conference. And participate in a number of workshops and live sessions. To make the best out of the situation, many presentations will be done by pre-recorded videos. This will allow you - in whatever time zone you are - to watch them when you want to and discuss them through a chat function. Video presentations will also limit connection problems we hope. During the festival, there will be a social corner to continue discussions, and we intend to organize a few thematic discussions. Like the live sessions and workshops, these will however be during European daytime only. More information will be available soon, as we’re still working on logistics. But we do hope to meet and greet all of you soon, even if it has to be online for now!
Citizen Science for Policy across Europe
EU-Citizen.Science is inviting representatives from ministries across Europe and at the regional and local levels to engage in a discussion about citizen science and its benefits for policy making. The main aim of this event is to develop collaborations among policy makers with citizen science interests. This event will be held as a satellite event of the European Research and Innovation Days on 22 June 2021.

The 8th STS Italia Conference will be hosted by the University of Trieste, Italy, June 17 through 19, 2021, by the Italian Society of Science and Technology Studies. It is our pleasure to announce that the calls for abstract are now open until December 18th, 2020. The conference will be an opportunity to present empirical and theoretical work from a variety of disciplines: sociology, anthropology, design, economics, history, law, philosophy, psychology and semiotics. The focal theme of the 8th STS Italia Conference will be "Dis/Entangling Technoscience: Vulnerability, Responsibility and Justice”. This broad theme refers to the complex and ambivalent role of technoscience and innovation in constituting societies – making possibilities flourish, but also creating new vulnerabilities. The conference will include 28 tracks, which are clustered into five thematic streams. The tracks focus on several topics, including: biomedicine, digital platforms and media, work and organizations, expertise and public policy, ethics of technology and innovation, and governance of science and technology at large. Abstracts (written in English, or in Italian in case of tracks in two language) should be submitted by December, 18 to the conference email address (stsitaliaconf@gmail.com) and to the emails of convenors' selected track. The European Green Week 2021 will be dedicated to the ‘zero pollution ambition’. It will also look at other relevant European Green Deal initiatives, such as the climate initiatives, the upcoming Chemicals Strategy, as well as initiatives in the fields of energy, industry, mobility, agriculture, fisheries, health and biodiversity. EU Green Week 2021 will be an opportunity to engage with all stakeholders and interested citizens on how we can work together to make the ambition for a zero pollution and toxic-free environment a reality.
Policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies
In view of the upcoming legislative proposal on ΑΙ and its ethical aspects, the event will seek to identify which issues and challenges of AI are in need of particular attention. It will also discuss ways to address those challenges and build on what was learned through the AI debate to better prepare for the next wave of scientific and technological advances, and ensure that these are beneficial to society and their risks are addressed early. Three major EU-funded projects, SIENNA, SHERPA and PANELFIT, representing a €10m investment in research from the European Commission to develop governance structures sensitive to ethical and human rights concerns in relation to emerging technologies, are coming together to discuss their findings and provide the context for a discussion on the policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies. PANELFIT Online Webinar: Data protection in journalism: practical tools
The European legal framework on personal data protection is constantly evolving and the issue of citizens’ privacy is increasingly central to the public debate. It is crucial for journalists to move confidently in this area, to ensure that people’s fundamental rights are respected while fully fulfilling their reporting role. During this webinar, the Practical Handbook for Journalists on Data Protection will be presented. This tool will be enriched over the coming months with the input and suggestions of journalists themselves, and will soon be available online. In a spirit of participatory development, the webinar will include an open space for questions, from which we will take inspiration to expand the Handbook. The event will be led by Iñigo De Miguel Beriain, senior researcher at the University of the Basque Country, and moderated by Federico Caruso, a collaborator of OBC Transeuropa.
