Vielschichtige Perspektiven & Erfahrungen Neben Inputs zu zentralen Themen rund um partizipative Projektarbeit lebt der CAS von den vielschichtigen Perspektiven und Erfahrungen der Teilnehmenden. Diese kommen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen: zum Beispiel aus der Forschung, Museen, Bibliotheken, Archiven, NGOs, der Verwaltung oder dem Gesundheitsbereich. So vielfältig diese Zielgruppe auf den ersten Blick sein mag, sie eint das Interesse an der Umsetzung partizipativer Projekte, an gemeinsamer Wissensproduktion und dem Einbezug der Bevölkerung. Genau in dieser Kombination aus Unterschieden und Gemeinsamkeiten der CAS-Teilnehmenden sehen wir eine grosse Chance für das Von- und Miteinander-Lernen und für die Vernetzung mit Gleichgesinnten, die sich in ganz anderen institutionellen Umgebungen bewegen und zu den verschiedensten Themen arbeiten.

How to use cosmic rays in the study of geosciences and archaeology

The technology developed to study fundamental physics can be applied to the development of frameworks that may have a significant impact on society. The Atmospheric Muons have unique potential to probe structures and provide insight in a series of issues, ranging from volcano live monitoring to applications in archaeology or use for non- invasive and non-destructive control processes in the industry. Muography is an innovative technique using secondary cosmic rays produced in the atmosphere, the most energetic of which have the property to cross ordinary matter over relevant distances (from meters to kilometers). The detection of those particles after any type of target allows therefore the characterization of the distribution and the density of the matter inside the target, as it is done for instance in medical imaging with X-rays. There is a strong societal impact of this technique, which is mostly passive and therefore adapted to any field of investigation: controls, risks assessment, hazards management. In the framework of REINFORCE, citizens will be provided with open data detected with distributed networks of cosmic ray detectors and will contribute in performing inquiries at the interplay between cosmic ray research and its applications. The webinar aims to give an overview of the Cosmic Muons Images Large Scale Citizen Science demonstrator and how it will be implemented in order to engage citizens in the scientific research, showcasing the tasks that citizens will be asked to perform and how their input will be fundamental to study geological phenomena and archaeology research by using Cosmic Rays. The workshop is aimed at citizen science project initiators and coordinators and will be guided by Stickydot (stickydot.eu/). „Vertrauen, Wirkung, Wandel: Citizen Science als Antrieb von Veränderung?” - so lautet das Motto des digitalen Forum Citizen Science vom 6. bis 8. Mai 2021 in Kooperation mit der Technischen Universität Berlin. Citizen Science ist (nicht nur) in Deutschland den Kinderschuhen entwachsen und wir möchten das Forum Citizen Science 2021 als Denk- und Reflexionsraum anbieten, um über Wirkungen von Citizen Science als Antrieb von Veränderung zu diskutieren: Setzt Citizen Science das Potenzial um, Vertrauen zwischen Wissensschaffenden mit unterschiedlicher Expertise aufzubauen? Welche Wirkung hat Citizen Science in den letzten Jahren in Wissenschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft? Wie lässt sich diese Wirkung überhaupt erfassen? Welchen Wandel kann Citizen Science herbeiführen? Citizen science: an approach to promote Planetary Health - 2021 PHAM

We live today in a risky society, which imposes on the current and future generations the need to know how to deal with uncertainties and the complexities of the environmental, social, political and economic systems that lead to the threat to the continuity of the human species on the planet. These uncertainties can directly affect individual and collective health, making it imperative that individuals understand the causes and consequences of global changes so that they can not only reflect, but also act individually and demand action from their representatives in the government based on that understanding and on evidence. Citizen science offers the opportunity for social participation in the generation of scientific knowledge and, at the same time, can empower individuals towards change. MOOC: A Roadmap to Citizen Science Education

BRITEC MOOC “A roadmap to citizen science Education” will provide materials and stories of implementation from innovative citizen science education projects. Citizen Science Education is based on the assumption that teachers and researchers can find a common ground of discussion and develop practices that are advantageous both, for the education sector, and the science sector. Therefore, this course proposes a process of collaboration between teachers and researchers. It provides insights from the perspective of researchers that have supported teachers developing STEM learning scenarios that include scientific activities based on the needs of active research projects.

Österreich forscht and the NestCams project of the Konrad Lorenz Research Center invite you to the Citizen Science Online Pub Quiz. Lessons and insights from WeObserve

WeObserve tackles three key challenges that citizens observatories face: (1) awareness, (2) acceptability and (3) sustainability. Its overall mission is to create a sustainable ecosystem of citizen observatories that can systematically address these identified challenges and help move citizen science into the mainstream. As the project draws to its conclusion, team members will highlight what the project has learnt through its activities. Policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies

In view of the upcoming legislative proposal on ΑΙ and its ethical aspects, the event will seek to identify which issues and challenges of AI are in need of particular attention. It will also discuss ways to address those challenges and build on what was learned through the AI debate to better prepare for the next wave of scientific and technological advances, and ensure that these are beneficial to society and their risks are addressed early. Three major EU-funded projects, SIENNA, SHERPA and PANELFIT, representing a €10m investment in research from the European Commission to develop governance structures sensitive to ethical and human rights concerns in relation to emerging technologies, are coming together to discuss their findings and provide the context for a discussion on the policy options for the ethical governance of disruptive technologies. PANELFIT Online Webinar: Data protection in journalism: practical tools

The European legal framework on personal data protection is constantly evolving and the issue of citizens’ privacy is increasingly central to the public debate. It is crucial for journalists to move confidently in this area, to ensure that people’s fundamental rights are respected while fully fulfilling their reporting role. During this webinar, the Practical Handbook for Journalists on Data Protection will be presented. This tool will be enriched over the coming months with the input and suggestions of journalists themselves, and will soon be available online. In a spirit of participatory development, the webinar will include an open space for questions, from which we will take inspiration to expand the Handbook. The event will be led by Iñigo De Miguel Beriain, senior researcher at the University of the Basque Country, and moderated by Federico Caruso, a collaborator of OBC Transeuropa.
