Inclusivity in Citizen Science Workshop
ECSA’s second Diversity and Inclusiveness workshop will take place over Zoom on Wednesday 2 June at 16:00 CEST. This series is being co-organised by four partners: ECSA, the ECSA & Living Knowledge Network working group on empowerment, inclusiveness and equity, D-NOSES and Cos4Cloud. We will be hearing from Judy Ling Wong (Honorary President, Black Environmental Network), Dr Monica Ramirez-Andreotta (Project Harvest), and Kylo Thomas (Making Spaces Project), about their experiences in creating inclusive community projects and environments, followed by group discussions. The event is now open for registration.
From the 1st of June until the 30th of September, the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona will participate in a Bioblitz called "BioMARató". The region that gets the most underwater observations, detects more invasive and rare species or gets the most participants will win. This event is part of the City Nature Challenge (CNC), an international friendly competition of naturalistic observations where cities worldwide will compete with each other. Hard-to-reach groups in Citizen Science & Science Communication
With a claim to democraticize science and actively involve the general population, science communication and citizen science are increasingly turning their attention to so-called "hard-to-reach groups". But who or what are hard-to-reach groups? What strategies are proving helpful and effective? How can diversity and inclusion be ensured? The OeAD Center for Citizen Science would like to reflect on these questions with experts from different fields, disciplines and institutions during a keynote speech and a panel discussion to show through practical examples how "hard-to-reach groups" can be reached in the best possible way. Citizen science: an approach to promote Planetary Health - 2021 PHAM
We live today in a risky society, which imposes on the current and future generations the need to know how to deal with uncertainties and the complexities of the environmental, social, political and economic systems that lead to the threat to the continuity of the human species on the planet. These uncertainties can directly affect individual and collective health, making it imperative that individuals understand the causes and consequences of global changes so that they can not only reflect, but also act individually and demand action from their representatives in the government based on that understanding and on evidence. Citizen science offers the opportunity for social participation in the generation of scientific knowledge and, at the same time, can empower individuals towards change. PANELFIT Online Webinar: Data protection in journalism: practical tools
The European legal framework on personal data protection is constantly evolving and the issue of citizens’ privacy is increasingly central to the public debate. It is crucial for journalists to move confidently in this area, to ensure that people’s fundamental rights are respected while fully fulfilling their reporting role. During this webinar, the Practical Handbook for Journalists on Data Protection will be presented. This tool will be enriched over the coming months with the input and suggestions of journalists themselves, and will soon be available online. In a spirit of participatory development, the webinar will include an open space for questions, from which we will take inspiration to expand the Handbook. The event will be led by Iñigo De Miguel Beriain, senior researcher at the University of the Basque Country, and moderated by Federico Caruso, a collaborator of OBC Transeuropa. Art Pluriverse: A Community Science Series
The Biennale of Western Balkans opens a month-long online programme of collective actions for intangible cultural heritage and open knowledge. The programme focuses on empowering communities of practice in the Balkan region, documenting their cultural knowledge in cooperative, ethical and accessible ways. The 1st edition aims to uplift local knowledge and intangible cultural practices related to textiles, through the development of FAIR community archives and research-based art creation.
