Join us to discuss participatory research and citizen science and their impact on policy and practice. This event aims to inspire and support you to explore what citizen science is and the opportunities it offers, for policymakers, funders and researchers alike. A range of speakers from international research and policy areas will reflect on citizen science as a form of participatory research, and its impact on policymakers and practitioners around the world. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about current projects funded by UKRI and FSA which are exploring ways of embedding citizen science across research, from the safety of infant formula to young people’s mental health. There will be opportunities to explore themes based on your interests in citizen science and its potential impacts, and network with others interested and involved in citizen science. Who should attend this event? This event is open to anyone to attend. You may be interested in this event if you are a policy-maker, funder, commissioner of research, or a researcher. You are welcome to attend if you are familiar with citizen science or interested in finding out more. ECSA 2022 Conference: Citizen Science for Planetary Health
Why “Citizen Science for Planetary Health”? Because the health of our planet is at risk. To preserve and support the well-being of all life on Earth, we need the commitment and efforts of everyone – policy makers, the public, business, science and research. Citizen science offers effective and innovative ways to do transdisciplinary research and influence decision-making in multiple areas and ways. Citizen science is particularly suited to connect diverse fields and diverse actors in the common endeavour of collaborating in research. The concept of planetary health is based on the understanding that human health and human civilization depend on thriving natural systems and the sustainable stewardship of those natural systems. This demands not only knowledge, commitment and engagement of health and environmental sciences, but inter- and transdisciplinary efforts from all research fields and societal and political actors. The ECSA 2022 Conference invites researchers from all disciplines, civil society actors, citizen scientists, policy decision-makers and all interested in the topic in Europe and worldwide to reflect, discuss and network around the topic of “Citizen Science for Planetary Health”.
The Open Science Conference 2022 is the 9th international conference of the Leibniz Research Alliance Open Science. The annual conference is dedicated to the Open Science movement and provides a unique forum for researchers, librarians, practitioners, infrastructure providers, policy makers, and other important stakeholders to discuss the latest and future developments in Open Science. The conference offers insights into both practical and technical innovations that serve the implementation of open practices as well as current and pioneering developments in the global Open Science movement. Such developments are, for example, the increasing plea for open practices as lessons learned from global crises as well as recent discussions on the relation of Open Science and knowledge equity. Furthermore, the conference offers many opportunities for networking and exchange.
We are organising an hybrid scientific session at the Ocean Science Meeting, 27 Feb - 4 March 2022 on ‘The uptake of data by citizen scientists, aggregators and end-users: successes, challenges and gaps in the dataflow’ and are inviting you to submit an abstract by 29 September 2021. Over the last decade, marine citizen science projects have provided a cost-effective means to collect extensive data sets covering vast spatio-temporal scales where conventional data collection is limited in operation, such as coastal seas. However many initiatives fail to be sustainable, and fail to reach acceptance of their data by scientists and by policy makers. To be efficient and successful a project should provide data with sufficient quality, structure and availability to be used by professionals and ensure that citizen scientists realize and appreciate the impact of their contribution towards the understanding of the scientific big picture. When studying the flow of citizen science data, it follows a series of steps from the providers to the users, via data aggregators. The essential steps of this process are the acquisition, management, flow in key infrastructure, evaluation and impact analyses, use in ocean models, research and forecasting, and public visualization. The objective of the co-organizers is to provide a session during which participants will share experiences on successes and failures, needs and limitations in the data flow chain. The session wishes to be a unique niche for the numerous actors of the data flow in marine citizen science initiatives to meet and exchange. It will explore current and future collaborations, hear from invited experts about wider citizen science initiatives and discuss how marine data aggregators in its next phase can more systematically link with citizen science to not only expand the data provision from citizen science, but also find ways to encourage citizen science to work closer with data aggregators across the full value chain.

Con grande piacere comunichiamo che l’11-12 novembre 2021 presso il Museo di Storia Naturale della Maremma (Grosseto) si terrà un incontro Nazionale di Citizen Science organizzato in collaborazione con EU-Citizen.Science e Action. Sarà l'occasione per aggiornare la comunità italiana di CS sulle principali novità dei progetti italiani e internazionali. Gli interventi per la presentazione dei progetti saranno strutturati come "speed-talk" di pochi minuti, oltre alle domande. Verrà fatto circolare più avanti un template per le presentazioni. Stiamo lavorando per organizzare l'evento in presenza, nel rispetto della vigente normativa anti-Covid. L'incontro sarà in ogni caso fruibile anche in streaming sulla pagina Fb di CSI e sul sito del museo. Tuttavia vi invitiamo, se possibile, a intervenire di persona (soprattutto se avete un progetto da illustrare). The general program includes a first day (11th of November) dedicated to the presentation of the projects. On the second day (12th of November) there will be two parallel sessions: one as a continuation of the presentation of the projects, the other, by invitation, a policy masterclass dedicated to policymakers organized by Action. On the afternoon of the second day, we will evaluate the opportunity to found an Italian Association of Citizen Science. Citizen Science for the Oceans: From observation to information - towards digital twins of the ocean
In this webinar you will learn about citizen science activities related to the oceans. We will use the case of jelly fish as an example, start with the observations done by citizens using mobile apps. Then you learn how the data can be integrated in systems, including the use of standards making the data, in this case biological data, interoperable. You will also learn how to approach making the apps themselves. As NextGEOSS already has citizen science data catalogued on the data hub, you will now learn how we will expand this with the help from among others Earthwatch through their contribution to the ILIAD project. This webinar aims to reach Earth observation professionals and students, Citizen science public and private organisations, App makers, ocean advocates, marine environmentalist, oceanographers, ecologists.
SeeRRI Final Conference | Bringing RRI into Regional Planning
Since January 2019, the SeeRRI project has been working with European regional policymakers to explore how regional governments can practice responsible regional planning – regional planning that is anticipative, reflexive, inclusive, and responsive. Nearly three years of joint efforts will culminate in the “Bringing RRI into regional planning: From theory to SeeRRI” Conference to be held in Barcelona on September 29-30, 2021. At the conference, participants will: (1) Learn about the outcomes and lessons from the SeeRRI project; (2) Hear interesting perspectives on sustainability, regional innovation strategies, RRI, and related topics from a range of distinguished guest speakers; (3) Engage in debates that challenge conventional wisdom on how to be responsible in regional planning; (4) Have a chance to network with professionals from across Europe who have an interest in responsible regional planning and responsible research and innovation. The conference is free to attend for anyone who is interested.
ORION Open Science Final Conference
The conference will consist of two parts of 3 hours each: 27 September - Co-creation, engagement and dialogue – Sharing experiences Get practical hands-on tips and tricks to engage the public in science and how to embed Open Science practices in your organisation. The session will highlight tools; citizen science activities, co-creation methodologies, funding frameworks, action plans and training materials developed and tested during the ORION Open Science project. 28 September - Embedding Open Science practices at national, European and institutional level Join policy makers and other stakeholders from across Europe to discuss ways to embed open science practices at national, European and institutional level as well as future collaboration opportunities.
Engaging the society beyond data collection
The challenges of ocean monitoring require data from everywhere at all times, we need to involve society in all steps of the process to achieve the information necessary to implement evidence-based policies in coastal and ocean management. This workshop is a Satellite Activity of the Event “A Predicted Ocean”, an Ocean Decade Laboratory organized in the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean for Sustainable Development. The workshop will analyse different challenges in volunteer participation in ocean monitoring projects: from potential barriers for volunteer participation up to how to improve the management of the cost and oceans developing evidence-based policies using in some cases the information generated in these participative processes. Webinar: Blueprint for reducing plastic pollution in rivers through citizen science
Rivers are critical to all life on the planet. They are a source of drinking water and a vital ecosystem for many species. Clean rivers are key. In most recent years, it becomes clear that our rivers are polluted with plastics. Scientific evidence shows that these polluted rivers also contribute to the worldwide plastic pollution of our oceans. In this webinar, we will present the blueprint of our Clean Rivers project and explain how to set a project that focusses on tackling river litter pollution. The program will be interactive to share experiences, knowledge and future collaborations. The program is targeted at non-governmental organisations, policy makers and advisors at European, regional and local level, politicians, waterboards, institutes, universities and companies. Citizen Science for Policy across Europe
EU-Citizen.Science is inviting representatives from ministries across Europe and at the regional and local levels to engage in a discussion about citizen science and its benefits for policy making. The main aim of this event is to develop collaborations among policy makers with citizen science interests. This event will be held as a satellite event of the European Research and Innovation Days on 22 June 2021.
