From Citizens to Science: Tools Driving Climate Action
On April 28, 2025, during the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in Vienna, the H2020 I-CHANGE project will hold its final scientific event titled “From Citizens to Science: Tools Driving Climate Action” Over the past four year, I-CHANGE has worked to place citizens at the core of climate action, demonstrating that informed, empowered communities are essential for achieving behavioural change. By combining active citizen participation, innovative technologies, and scientific collaboration, the project has fostered behavioural transformations towards more sustainable living. This closing event will present the outcomes of I-CHANGE, showcasing results from its eight Living Labs across Europe and beyond. These Living Labs served as active hubs for environmental monitoring, and community engagement, emphasizing how citizens can observe and reduce their own environmental impacts. The event will feature the presentation of the project’s final results, including scientific findings, technological and engaging activities that have been implemented to raise climate change awareness and foster participatory science. It will also include talks from sister projects involved in citizen science initiatives related to climate change, and offer reflections on how citizen-generated data can complement scientific observations and help shape a more sustainable future. In addition, on May 1, 2025, key I-CHANGE results will be featured during the EGU session titled “Engaging Citizens in Understanding Urban Climate and Climate Change Risks through Participatory Science.” This session invites contributions that explore citizen participation, crowdsourced data collection, and effective practices for integrating the public into climate adaptation efforts across Europe. During the past few years, the EU-funded project, I-CHANGE, has facilitated eight living labs in- and outside the EU. We’ve done so to work with citizen science in monitoring environmental risks related to our changing climate. The hope of this project is that we, by helping citizens better understand the scientific links between behaviour, climate change, and risks, push toward societal change for new patterns of behaviour. In this interactive digital event, we will be discussing our learnings and ask you to reflect upon them with us: Does knowledge change behaviour? How do we make for a more just transition? What are alternative ways of understanding and creating change? The event is open for everyone, and you will be able to speak and listen in your native language. By partaking in this event, you consent to let us document the event proceedings by taking notes and screenshots of the online meeting.
'Introduction to Citizen Artist™ and Art-Based Research Methods'
In this online hybrid and experiential course, you will be introduced to Art-Based Perceptual Ecology (ABPE) research methodologies, non-conventional field-based research methods grounded in multimodal knowledge systems, sensory-based learning and framed within ecological and biological principles. The ABPE methods and tools have application to studying changes in ecological systems and addressing critical environmental issues such as biodiversity decline, habitat loss and effects from climate change. Contrary to our name, there is no need for an art background or art experience to take the course.

Citizen Science has the power to deliver major change in the way the EU Green Deal objectives are delivered. If we can get just 15% of the population of Europe engaged to tackle behavioural change issues through citizen science nearly 70 million people would be driving change on issues such as air quality, climate change and sustainable lifestyles. Reaching out and stepping up: How citizen science and RRI can enhance bioscience research
Since the onset of the COVID19 pandemic, the impact of bioscience research on all of our lives has been made far too clear. However, developments within this field of research will continue to have long-lasting impacts on the world around us long after the current pandemic, from improving food security, mitigating climate change, protecting wildlife and the environment, as well as to continued medical advancements of all types. As the world continues to collide with the field of bioscience research, it has become increasingly important to include societal actors when we approach these fields of study. ResBios and StepChange invite you to join an online conversation about how RRI and citizen science can be used to enhance research, with a particular focus on open science and public engagement in the fields of bioscience research. By combining our shared experiences, we aim to demonstrate the theory and practice of employing these principles while discussing future challenges.
Webinar & Workshop "Copernicus: Europe's Satellite Data for Our Own Climate"
The event offers participants a first insight into the Earth Observation System "Copernicus" and the broad application possibilities of the openly available data. Copernicus offers freely accessible services in various fields, which among other things directly contribute to the monitoring of climate change. In addition, a limited number of participants will have the opportunity to get to know and use the Sen2Cube.at toolbox of the University of Salzburg in a professionally guided workshop. Sen2cube supports the image analysis of satellite data of user-defined regions and intervals. By means of an example it will be shown how these data can be used for own research. Unleashing the potential of Citizen Science Data for monitoring the SDGs
Crowd4SDG Panel Discussion and Call for NSO challenges. As a Crowd4SDG project partner, UNITAR is hosting this online panel for National Statistical Offices and Systems to discuss how to leverage citizen science data using both “active” and “passive” approaches, and what quality assurance criteria to consider. The panel will present the results of the Crowd4SDG report developed with the guidance of the Advisory Group. Several National Statistical Offices and other organizations will share their experiences and work on the use of citizen science data. Following the presentation of the Crowd4SDG tools developed for citizen scientists,the event will also feature "Propose your Crowd4SDG challenge" segment in connection with a public competition to be launched later this year to develop citizen science projects that tackle climate change and gender inequality.
