SpliTech 2023: International conference on smart and sustainable technologies

2023 Citizen Science Association conference

The 2023 Citizen Science Association conference, C*Sci 2023, will be held from May 22-26 on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, Arizona (Phoenix metro area). This event convenes conversations across disciplines, roles, and perspectives. Together, we seek and share the traditional and innovative practices that lead to powerful partnerships for discovery, learning, and action. The conference will be interdisciplinary in scope, inviting abstracts for cross-cutting symposia, interactive workshops, engaging talks, and dynamic posters. Over the past few years, the CSA Conference Team has also piloted innovative ways to convene across boundaries of space and time. The 2023 event offers us the first opportunity since 2019 to connect in person, and the program leans into the unique ways we learn from one another in a shared space. A light hybrid program will also be available to ensure that travel is not a barrier to contributions.

Joint ICTP-IAEA Advanced School/Workshop on Machine Learning in Citizen Science

Recommendations for policy-makers arising from CS Track investigations into Citizen Science

The main mission of the CS Track project has been to observe and analyse the phenomena of citizen science using empirical and theoretical studies. Based on these studies, the team have constructed a set of policy recommendations. Further specific policy recommendations have also been prepared with the stated purpose of directing attention to questions related to Citizen Science that need attention. During this webinar the team will present the recommendations that they have prepared arising from the CS Track project and will discuss their impact on Citizen Science policy from different perspectives. The role of photographic heritage in empowering communities participation in cultural heritage

This event is organized by Photoconsortium in cooperation with the University of Pisa and will be hosted at the Museum of Graphics in Pisa (Italy). The event will take the form of a 1-day conference with leading speakers from the CitizenHeritage consortium partners and other experts in digital cultural heritage, in Social Sciences and Humanities research and in the use of participatory approaches in a cultural and/or educational context. The main aim of the event will be to offer insights about successful stories of citizen participation in Cultural Heritage Institutions and Higher Education Institutions. In addition to the conference programme, a digitization desk will be organized, inviting participants to share heritage photos from their family albums, which will be digitized on the spot by a professional photographer. The stories associated with the image(s) will be collected and converted in appropriate metadata to accompany the digital objects. The collected records will be aggregated by Photoconsortium and offered to Europeana for publication.

REINFORCE International Youth Art & Science Contest

The REINFORCE International Youth Art & Science Contest focuses on the concepts of fundamental physics, such as space, time and the nature and structure of the Universe. We are seeking artwork from kids aged 4-18 and all contestants have until 15 September, 2022 to submit their work. The winning entries will be presented during the 2022 European Researchers'Nights events at the European Gravitational Observatory and the finalists will be given the opportunity to participate in a virtual tour of the Observatory and the VIRGO detector (https://www.ego-gw.it). Those able to visit the site for the occasion will have the chance to undertake the tour in person! All participants will receive a REINFORCE Youth Artist Certificate and the artwork from the winners and finalists (a minimum of 3) will be published on the Platform for Artistic Intervention created on the Project website! Over the last decade, marine citizen science projects have provided a cost-effective means to collect extensive data sets covering vast spatio-temporal scales where conventional data collection is limited in operation, such as coastal seas. However many initiatives fail to be sustainable, and fail to reach acceptance of their data by scientists and by policy makers. To be efficient and successful a project should provide data with sufficient quality, structure and availability to be used by professionals and ensure that citizen scientists realize and appreciate the impact of their contribution towards the understanding of the scientific big picture. When studying the flow of citizen science data, it follows a series of steps from the providers to the users, via data aggregators. The essential steps of this process are the acquisition, management, flow in key infrastructure, evaluation and impact analyses, use in ocean models, research and forecasting, and public visualization. The objective of the co-organizers is to provide a session during which participants will share experiences on successes and failures, needs and limitations in the data flow chain. The session wishes to be a unique niche for the numerous actors of the data flow in marine citizen science initiatives to meet and exchange. It will explore current and future collaborations, hear from invited experts about wider citizen science initiatives and discuss how marine data aggregators in its next phase can more systematically link with citizen science to not only expand the data provision from citizen science, but also find ways to encourage citizen science to work closer with data aggregators across the full value chain.

Online Course on Management of Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas

If you are a post graduate student, young scientist, member of a MAB Youth Group, educator or manager working on Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas, then, this online course is for you! The course is the virtual part of the 2021 Asterousia Hybrid University on Management of Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas, and will run from 10 January to 6 February 2022. The course in a nutshell : DURATION: Four weeks, starting from 10 January to 6 February 2022. FORMAT: It combines asynchronous (self-paced) and synchronous sessions (weekly live meetings). COMMITTMENT: The total training time for learners is approx. 20 hours (~5 hours/week). PARTICIPANTS: MAB Youth Group members, Post-Graduate Students, Young Scientists, Educators and Managers of Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas, with a priority to be given to applicants from European and Mediterranean countries. LANGUAGE: English. CERTIFICATION: Learners who succesfully complete 80% of the course assignments will get the course's certificate co-signed by the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Culture in Europe and the UNESCO Chair & Network on Sustainable Development Management and Education in the Mediterranean.
