ESCAPE 1st Citizen Science Workshop
The First ESCAPE Citizen Science Workshop will feature showcases of successful citizen science projects in several research fields covered by the ESCAPE Science Partners. There will also be a series of hands-on tutorials in which you will learn how to build your own citizen science project, implement advanced statistical aggregation methods and integrate machine learning.
Workshop series: Common challenges in citizen science
Scivil and Stickydot are organising a series of four thematic workshops on common challenges in citizen science. These workshops are aimed at people who are involved or interested in coordinating, organising or supporting citizen science initiatives. Experience with citizen science is welcome, but not required, just your willingness to ask, share and discuss about the topic! Each workshop will kick off with a short inspirational testimonial by a citizen science practitioner, followed by breakout and plenary sessions where you will be discussing and exchanging questions, experiences and challenges with the other participants. The first one of these workshops will take place on the 30th of November; the second one on the 7th of December; the third one on the 14th of December; and the last one on the 21st of December. You can sign up for just one workshop, all four, or anything in between.
“CitSciOz21: Celebrate, Communicate, Co-create” is an online virtual conference organised by the Australian Citizen Science Association that will take place 27 – 29 October 2021. Centered around the themes of Celebrate, Communicate, and Co-Create, this virtual experience will invite participants to explore, investigate and showcase successful citizen science projects from Australia and the rest of the world. Moreover, different citizen science communication techniques for maximum impact will be showcased. The virtual conference will ensure a highly interactive and engaging event, with the capacity to network with your fellow attendees, speakers, and sponsors as well as providing you with the learning outcomes and benefits you would come to expect from an in-person event.
Citizen engagement TRANSFORMing regional R&I policymaking
Citizen engagement can strengthen trust between institutions and citizens. In the TRANSFORM project (funded under Horizon 2020) citizen science, co-design and co-creation have been applied to regional R&I decision-making in Lombardy, Catalonia, and Brussels-Capital. Through sharing of experiences and promising outcomes of citizen engagement in regional R&I policies, this participatory lab will provide examples and suggestions on how to create more open, transparent and inclusive regional R&I governance processes. Join us in an interactive session and learn more about the benefits of citizen engagement, get your questions answered by experts, share your experiences and suggestions for further applications in regional decision making. I Encuentro Nacional de Ciencia Ciudadana, Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades: Identidades Comunes
El evento se concibe como un encuentro de cooperación e intercambio de conocimientos entre gestores de proyectos, investigadores y ciudadanía, en el que los participantes comparten sus experiencias. El programa del evento combina ponencias y mesas redondas en las que participarán expertos de diversas áreas con presentaciones de proyectos de ciencia ciudadana relacionados con las ciencias sociales y las humanidades. Además, habrá espacio para la realización de talleres de carácter práctico dirigidos a profesionales y a público general en los que se podrá conocer con mayor profundidad algunos de los proyectos presentados.
Engaging the society beyond data collection
The challenges of ocean monitoring require data from everywhere at all times, we need to involve society in all steps of the process to achieve the information necessary to implement evidence-based policies in coastal and ocean management. This workshop is a Satellite Activity of the Event “A Predicted Ocean”, an Ocean Decade Laboratory organized in the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean for Sustainable Development. The workshop will analyse different challenges in volunteer participation in ocean monitoring projects: from potential barriers for volunteer participation up to how to improve the management of the cost and oceans developing evidence-based policies using in some cases the information generated in these participative processes. Citizen Social Science School: Social Dimensions in Citizen Science
This virtual experience will take place online from 13-23 September. The main goal of this event is to offer academic researchers a common space and a shared time to reflect, discuss, learn, and receive practical guidelines to explore social dimensions behind a wide set of Citizen Science practices related to social issues and when involving groups and persons in a vulnerable situation acting as co-researchers.
Webinar: Blueprint for reducing plastic pollution in rivers through citizen science
Rivers are critical to all life on the planet. They are a source of drinking water and a vital ecosystem for many species. Clean rivers are key. In most recent years, it becomes clear that our rivers are polluted with plastics. Scientific evidence shows that these polluted rivers also contribute to the worldwide plastic pollution of our oceans. In this webinar, we will present the blueprint of our Clean Rivers project and explain how to set a project that focusses on tackling river litter pollution. The program will be interactive to share experiences, knowledge and future collaborations. The program is targeted at non-governmental organisations, policy makers and advisors at European, regional and local level, politicians, waterboards, institutes, universities and companies. Ciencia ciudadana y cambio climático
El próximo jueves 29 de julio se presentará a través de un evento online gratuito la guía Red 4C sobre ciencia ciudadana y cambio climático tras un año de trabajo de más de 30 entidades. La cita se concibe como una oportunidad para dar a conocer la investigación y las propuestas concretas para promover el compromiso de la sociedad con un problema cada vez más interiorizado entre los españoles. La jornada la abrirá la Directora de la Fundación Biodiversidad del Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Democrático, Elena Pita. Tras ella intervendrán Maite Pelacho del Observatorio de la Ciencia Ciudadana en España y la Fundación Ibercivis con la ponencia: ¿Se puede observar el cambio climático?. El evento también contará con la intervención de dos representantes de Red Cambera, entidad sin ánimo de lucro que trabaja con el objetivo de conservar la naturaleza. Por un lado lo hará Paloma F. Valdor hablando sobre la Guía Red4C, la experiencia de 30 entidades, una red de trabajo destinada a abordar la mitigación y adaptación al cambio climático mediante ciencia ciudadana. Tras ella intervendrá Nacho Cloux con la presentación Proyecto Ríos se escribe con 4C, una red de trabajo destinada a abordar la mitigación y adaptación al cambio climático mediante ciencia ciudadana.
Call for abstracts Open Track on PANDEMIC AND STS - 8th STS Conference

The 8th STS Italia Conference will be hosted by the University of Trieste, Italy, June 17 through 19, 2021, by the Italian Society of Science and Technology Studies. It is our pleasure to announce that the calls for abstract are now open until December 18th, 2020. The conference will be an opportunity to present empirical and theoretical work from a variety of disciplines: sociology, anthropology, design, economics, history, law, philosophy, psychology and semiotics. The focal theme of the 8th STS Italia Conference will be "Dis/Entangling Technoscience: Vulnerability, Responsibility and Justice”. This broad theme refers to the complex and ambivalent role of technoscience and innovation in constituting societies – making possibilities flourish, but also creating new vulnerabilities. The conference will include 28 tracks, which are clustered into five thematic streams. The tracks focus on several topics, including: biomedicine, digital platforms and media, work and organizations, expertise and public policy, ethics of technology and innovation, and governance of science and technology at large. Abstracts (written in English, or in Italian in case of tracks in two language) should be submitted by December, 18 to the conference email address (stsitaliaconf@gmail.com) and to the emails of convenors' selected track. INOS Project Event – Integrating Citizen Science at Universities: From ‘What’ to ‘How
Should science focus on issues of public importance/respond to public concerns? What are the benefits of citizen involvement in scientific research? What are the pitfalls? These and many more questions are frequently raised by those engaging or wishing to engage in Citizen Science (CS). This two-day workshop is designed to provide input into what CS is and how CS projects can be implemented in universities and research libraries. The workshop will focus on: • The basics of CS and its benefits; • Requirements to take into consideration when involving citizen scientists in research projects; • Examples and benefits of integrating CS into educational programmes; • Practical guidance on how to develop and implement CS projects; • Examples of CS research projects. The workshop will be of a highly participatory nature, with participants required to work in small groups during their own time. The first session will take place at 10.00 CEST on the 2nd of June, followed by a session at 14:00 CEST on the 4th of June.
ECSA & EU-Citizen.Science webinar: Introducing new citizen science projects launching in 2021
Our webinar on the 26th May 2021 (14.00-15.30 CEST) will highlight new citizen science projects starting in 2021, with short talks from three early career researchers: – Famke Mölenberg (she/her/hers) (Erasmus MC, Netherlands) is an epidemiologist working on SEEDS, which aims to engage teenagers from Spain, the Netherlands, Greece and the United Kingdom in their health education and science literacy by directly empowering through citizen science. She tweets as @FamkeMolenberg. – Dr Cristina Zaga (she/her/hers) (University of Twente, Netherlands) is assistant professor in human-centred design working on Incentive, which links project partners and citizen science to co-create sustainable transdisciplinary hubs for stimulating and supporting excellent citizen science and responsible research and innovation (RRI). She tweets as @Zaga_daga. – Isabelle Freiling (she/her/hers) (University of Vienna, Austria) is a communication scientist working in the YouCount project, which aims to identify positive drivers for social inclusion of youth at risk of exclusion, and cocreate innovations and policymaking using cocreative youth citizen social science.
