Let’s imagine training for facilitators in citizen science projects!
ECS and ECSA will be present at the Ecsite conference 2024 (https://ecsite.wildapricot.org/Programme/). Discover and share skills and training methods to facilitate participatory research and citizen science projects. Science centers and museums, universities and third-places are key players in participatory citizen science projects. These programs aim to give citizens their place in the production of knowledge, and can range from the simple collection of scientific data to the co-construction or even co-governance of research projects. In recent years, these approaches have beenstriving to become a mainstream approach to scientific research well beyond the classical topics connected to environment and biodiversity. But citizen science faces many challenges, such as reliable data, recruitment and participation of citizens or reluctance to use this approach by scientists and researchers. A less discussed issue, and perhaps a solution to some of these challenges, is that of the skills needed to facilitate this type of project. Indeed it is essential to create the conditions for dialogue and work for all stakeholders (research teams, citizens, partners, associations...). They need support to create together, transform their perspectives, adapt tools to their context, stay involved, understand each other in depth…What specific skills, knowledge and attitudes do facilitators need in these participatory projects? Could a training programme in facilitation and participation help? This session will offer a feedback from institutions involved in citizen science (inter)mediation and facilitation training. These short presentations will break down the problem into several sub-questions. They will form the basis of the workshop, during which participants will collectively identify the list of skills and training methods that are most relevant for the people in charge of facilitating particpatory citizen science projects. Mainstreaming citizen science at Ecsite2024 conference
In a 3-minutes show, the representatives of ECSA and of the ECS project showcases the potential of citizen science, the way ECSA works and the main characteristics of the ECS project. They use 3 coloured balls of yarn to create a web that unravels during the show and ultimately involve the viewers. The Ecsite conference is one of the main events dedicated to public engagement with about 1000 participants from science centres, museum, universities, associations and private companies.

Stories from the YouCount Youth - On new perspectives, being heard more deeply and belonging.
YouCount is working to co-create new knowledge and innovations to increase youth social inclusion. Since 2020, 100s of young people from local communities and 30 students from universities have worked with researchers on 10 research questions in 9 different countries. This webinar is a unique opportunity for you to learn about the YouCount project. 16 of these young people co-created this webinar and some of them will share their stories from the YouCount project. This includes lessons learned and what you should consider for future work with youth like them. Join us to learn about their important work, their results, and their valuable perspectives on engaging youth in citizen social science.
The European Citizen Science project, which connects a rich citizen science community, wants to provide a space to exchange practical experiences in integrating and using citizen science practices in universities and to gather recommendations for the European Commission and other stakeholders in ways of supporting citizen science in the high education sector. To do so, the project is organising an online event for everyone (such as academics, educators, university staff, citizen science practitioners, early career researchers, policy makers, civil servants, general public and industry representatives) interested in learning about and discussing the role of citizen science in transforming universities in Europe. The VERA platform serves as a “collaboratory” where participatory research/citizen science projects can be realized and new collaborations can be established. Through its profiling and matchmaking tool, its project management features and its funding database, VERA helps projects get started, stay organized, and find the necessary funding. At this interactive workshop, participants will share their experiences about the various dimensions of practicing participatory research/ citizen science within the social science and humanities domain and will get guidance on how to use the newly published VERA platform to best serve their project’s needs. The VERA developers and community manager will be onsite to collect valuable feedback from participants on how we can improve VERA before the final version is released in December 2023.
CitSciHelvetia is the Swiss Citizen Science Conference. CitSciHelvetia connects Swiss stakeholders in Citizen Science and participatory research in general, promoting the exchange of experiences and shared learning between the three language and cultural regions. It serves as the platform for professional exchange with Science et Cité hosting the second Swiss Citizen Science Conference. CitSciHelvetia'23 will take place on March 29 and 30, 2023 at Landhaus Solothurn. It follows the motto “Citizen Science – Making impact participatory!”. The conference addresses project leaders and project staff of Citizen Science projects, representatives of universities, research institutions, NGOs and associations as well as people who engage themselves in Citizen Science on an institutional level. In addition, the conference addresses representatives of science communication, transdisciplinary and participatory research, and Open Science. Registration for the Swiss Citizen Science Conference is open until March 8, 2023.
ECS Satellite event on Science Communication
The 2023 Annual Conference of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) will be held in Cordoba (Spain) on 24-25 February 2023. The day before the Conference - 23 February 2023 - a Science Communication Training Workshop will be held as a satellite event, organised by the European Citizen Science (ECS) project in collaboration with the MCAA Communication Working Group. The overall objective of the European Citizen Science (ECS) project is to enlarge, empower and strengthen the European Citizen Science community through training, capacity building and awareness raising activities which encompass the whole range of needs and challenges. As a member of the project consortium, the MCAA is taking part in several work packages and tasks. More specifically, through the ECS project, the MCAA will support the co-creation of the European Citizen Science Academy by designing training for educators, trainers, and researchers. As part of the ECS project, the MCAA is organising the training workshop “Science Communication: How to create a successful research blog.” Blogging is a powerful and effective way to communicate research to a wider audience and engage citizen into the science endeavour. Within the general framework of citizen science, in this workshop participants will learn the ins and outs of what it takes to explain their research in a popular science blog that can be understood by anyone. The one-day full-immersion workshop will be highly interactive and aims to teach by doing. It will also be an introductory course into science communication for researchers with and without prior experience. During the training workshop, participants will: - have an overview of citizen science and the ECS project - learn how science communication can positively impact society as well as a researcher’s career - write a short popular science blog that can be published after the workshop - learn to adjust the text to the communication goals and audience - learn how to reduce the scientific complexity and make scientific insights accessible and interesting The training will be guided by Science Matters, a leading European science communication agency led by scientists, with extensive experience in supporting universities, companies, media, and museums. The training workshop is open to both MCAA members and non-MCAA members. In order to make it as interactive as possible and provide personalised feedback, the workshop is limited to only 30 participants. The deadline for registration is 30 January 2023, 23:00 CET. Selection of participants will be done on a rolling basis, until all 30 seats are filled. Thanks to the support of the ECS project, participants will be able to attend the workshop paying a fee of 150 Euro, which corresponds to a 50% discount on the full price.

Citizen Science and Universities: Summer Course in Santander (Spain)
The summer course "Citizen Science and Universities" organised by the Menéndez Pelayo International University to be held on 11, 12 and 13 July in Santander. Citizen science is already a methodology used in numerous research projects. One of the challenges posed by the course is to find the most effective way to open the university to citizens through Citizen Science. The main objective of this summer course will be to establish a strategic line of work that opens up and brings Citizen Science closer to universities: - The democratization of the knowledge that is produced in the universities themselves, bringing their research work closer to their environment. - Directly linking the scientific advances obtained at the university with the real problems of the society in which it is based, as well as proposing possible solutions. This course will facilitate the identification of strategies to involve the university system more actively in Citizen Science projects, identifying good practices to carry them out and reflecting on the key elements that determine the implementation of Citizen Science methodologies in university science projects.

Innovative INOS: Bringing Open Knowledge and Innovation to Higher Education
Since 2019, the INOS project (Integrating open and citizen science into active learning approaches in higher education) has developed activities, experiences and tools to encourage HEIs to be part of this growing movement through teaching, learning, training and taking part in open innovation and knowledge activities. On the 3rd and the 4th of May the INOS project will hold a two-day online event to present the results and outputs of the project. The event will be split into three areas of discussion: - A general introduction to illustrate the ways that HEIs integrate open and citizen science into their practices. (3rd May AM); - A practical approach with workshops on pedagogical tools and best practices developed through the INOS project; - An inspiring discussion on the social role of universities through talks, a Knowledge Café to discuss the social and innovative impact that results from the practising of open and citizen science within HEIs. Webinar: Unlocking the Potential of Citizen Science Collaborations
This webinar is designed to discuss different approaches to citizen science by LIBER and ECSA Citizen Science Working Groups together with Leiden University, with the purpose of discovering synergies and potential opportunities for collaboration. During the webinar, speakers will cover: (1) achievements in advancing citizen science at libraries and universities; (2) the organisation of citizen science activities in universities, including a citizen science ‘engine room’ at the University of Southern Denmark; (3) how to embed citizen science activities for research and education purposes through sharing best practices, policies, and ‘sharing’ programmes; (4) finding the ‘sweet spot’ for citizen science in the matrix of faculty silos, top-down research, and bottom-up collaboration. We will hear the insights of four amazing speakers: Tiberius Ignat, Director of Scientific Knowledge Services (SKS); Anne Kathrine Overgaard, Head of External Projects at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark; Thomas Kaarsted, Deputy Library Director at the University of Southern Denmark; and Margaret Gold, Coordinator of the Citizen Science Lab at Leiden University.
Citizen Science: Two Institutional Viewpoints from the UK and Denmark
In this webinar, LIBER’s Citizen Science Working Group will focus on the role of Citizen Science in research universities and libraries by exploring two case studies: the UCL office for Open Science and Scholarship, and Citizen Science Knowledge Center at the University of Southern Denmark.
