Species Monitoring Schemes (Soortenmeetnetten)

Active

from 01/01/2016

The Species Monitoring Schemes project is a long-term monitoring project coordinated by INBO and ANB and outsourced through public tender to an external contractant. The contractant is responsible for the coordination of volunteer networks that monitor the presence and abundance of protected and vulnerable species using standardized protocols at fixed locations.

Aim

Long-term monitoring of European protected and Flemish priority species provides essential information for mandatory reporting in the context of European directives and Flemish legislation. This knowledge is crucial to monitor the status and trends of vulnerable, protected species and to take measures where necessary. For many species, citizen scientists provide crucial input of observations.

The volunteers visit fixed locations to identify and count specific target species, using standardized protocols allowing statistical analysis of conservation status and population trends at the scale of Flanders. A list of target species and monitoring schemes can be found at meetnetten.be (in Dutch).
