Plataancheck - Ecorc'air BE
from 25/03/2026 until 30/04/2026
The Plataancheck is a citizen‑science
project that enables residents to help measure fine particulate matter in their
own living environment. Until the end of April 2026, participants collect
pieces of bark from plane trees, a species that accumulates fine dust during
winter and releases it in spring through its naturally peeling bark. By
analyzing these bark fragments, we can map local air quality.
Thanks to this project, anyone can easily contribute to a
better understanding of air pollution and help build a healthier environment
for all. Participants follow a simple procedure: collect bark, generate a
unique code via the PartiCollect app, and send in the sample or drop it off at
a collection point. Join us and help improve air quality for everyone!
This project is the Belgian branch of the Ecorc'Air project, which started in France
(Center of Geosciences, Mines Paris – PSL) and later expanded to the
Netherlands (Plataancheck,
by Waag and Urgenda). The Belgian branch is a collaboration between the
University of Antwerp, Scivil ,
and UCLouvain.
Aim
The project aims to make
the presence of fine particulate matter in our living environment more visible
by involving citizens in collecting plane tree bark, which stores fine dust
during the winter. By analyzing this bark in the laboratory, we obtain a clearer
picture of local air pollution. In this way, the project helps raise awareness
and supports progress toward a healthier environment for everyone.
