Mallards are a familiar sight at many of our wetlands, but how much do we actually know about this species? DucklingWatch is a citizen science project tackling the lack of data on mallard productivity in the UK with the help of participants across Britain. Can you help us understand what drives changes in the British mallard population by counting ducklings?

Aim

The data from this project is used to estimate duckling survival and better understand what is driving changes in the British mallard population.

How to participate

For each mallard brood observed, participants need to record:

  • Date
  • Location
  • Number of ducklings
  • Approximate age

Repeated counts of individual broods over multiple days are particularly valuable as they help build a picture of how many ducklings survive per brood.

Sightings can be submitted at https://citsci.org/projects/ducklingwatch where more information can be found about the project including guides to estimating duckling age.
