more4nature aims to bring about transformative change in environmental protection regarding zero pollution, biodiversity protection and deforestation prevention by strengthening the role of citizens and communities in environmental compliance assurance (ECA), from promotion to monitoring and enforcement; via citizen science, citizen generated data, and citizen & community-led actions.
To achieve this, this Horizon Europe project works with a large number of existing citizen science initiatives which are interested in increasing and institutionalizing contributions to ECA.
more4nature is grounded in the notion that although policies and laws are generally in place to manage environmental resources, ECA is still lacking. More data and information are needed, public awareness has to be improved, and action must be taken to avoid further environmental degradation in terms of pollution of natural resources, biodiversity loss, and deforestation. Citizen science initiatives present innovative ways of joint data and knowledge generation and can empower citizens and communities in environmental protection. However, barriers to the uptake of citizen-generated data and citizen and community-led actions in ECA have not been effectively tackled.
more4nature uses a socio-technical approach to address these challenges and deepen the role of citizens and communities in ECA. The project assists 40 cases in Europe and globally, whereby transformative change in current ECA practices is stimulated through a process of social learning and socio-technical experimentation, combined with provision of algorithms, models, and interoperable systems to public authorities, to encourage the intended validation and uptake of citizen observations for ECA.
