Guardians of the Estuary
Guardians of the Estuary immersed pupils in the ecology, history and human use of the Fowey estuary. Classroom learning was combined with kayak tours, wildlife and harbour talks, local litter picking, sustainable living visits and maritime-history sessions. Students produced reports, assemblies and teaching materials that now support ongoing estuary stewardship.
Aim
The project aimed to build environmental and socio-cultural awareness of the Fowey estuary and to inspire pupils to become long-term guardians of their local waters. It linked conservation, local heritage, biodiversity and sustainability to the national curriculum. The work also aimed to involve families, local businesses and the wider Cornwall Education Learning Trust in protecting the estuary.
