Posidonia Meadows: Project for the germination of Posidonia Oceanica seeds and revegetation of a degraded area
The project investigated Posidonia oceanica restoration in Ibiza through seed collection, aquarium cultivation and field observation. Although few seeds were available, the single seed germinated successfully and fragments were grown under monitored conditions. Students also kayaked and snorkelled over meadows, quantified microplastics and produced manuals, triptychs and growth-recording tools.
Aim
The project aimed to help students understand the ecological importance of Posidonia oceanica meadows and the challenges of restoring degraded marine habitats. It sought to combine professional training, marine biology and field observation so students could experience both the limits and possibilities of restoration work. The project also aimed to create reusable materials and a knowledge repository for future cohorts.
