Empowering Cornish Communities Through Ocean Advocacy: Investigating Floating Plastic Debris, Microplastics and Water Quality
Students investigated floating plastic debris, microplastics and water quality across the Irish and Celtic Seas. Fieldwork combined area-based sea sampling and shore surveys, supported by a school-wide literacy strand. Additionally, the project created a "Carbon-Smart Seamanship" science practical for 10 students, which included lesson plans and worksheets focusing on cumulative CO2 charts and timeseries data.
Aim
To build ocean advocacy and community understanding of marine plastics, water quality and low-carbon fieldwork. The work linked classroom learning with practical environmental action and helped students communicate the value of protecting their local aquatic environment.
