Verd de proximitat BCN

The primary objective of the “Verd de proximitat BCN” project is to design and implement a plan to monitor and evaluate the performance and impact of green roofs and facades in Barcelona. This plan is intended to be inclusive, participatory, economically viable, and sustainable in the long term.
To this end, a group has been formed bringing together owners and users of these nature-based solutions, the scientific community, the business sector, and social integration organizations. Together, they will co-design and co-implement the retrospective monitoring of four ongoing projects to evaluate their performance and the actual impact of these construction solutions based on previously selected key indicators.

Aim
The overall
objective of the “Verd de proximitat BCN” project is to design and implement a
plan to monitor and evaluate the performance and impact of integrating
vegetation into building envelopes—specifically green roofs, walls, and
facades—in the city of Barcelona, ensuring the plan is inclusive,
participatory, economically viable, and sustainable over time.
To ensure the
designed model is relevant and useful to immediate end-users while also
providing the information needed for future urban planning processes, the plan
will adhere to the following fundamental principles:
a) be
scientifically sound;
b) be practical
and straightforward;
c) clearly define
baseline conditions;
d) align with
municipal policies;
e) be based on a
transdisciplinary approach.
How to participate
The following is
a compilation of some of the most notable results from the selected projects.
These examples illustrate the various ways information about an ongoing project
can be gathered to evaluate its performance and impact—ranging from simply measuring
the area of green coverage (in m²) to installing sensors for real-time data
collection, using mobile apps to record sensory observations, and assessing
user responses. Some examples of how citizen science plays a role in specific
parts of the project include:
1. Climate resilience / 1.1. Stored carbon: Given the complexity of measuring this key aspect from a citizen science perspective, a simple calculation based on existing scientific evidence was chosen.
5. Biodiversity improvement / 5.3. Pollinator species: Evaluation method: Number and types of animal species observed on the green roof or green façade. Using mobile apps to record observations is a very useful and simple citizen science option.

6.2. Ambient odor / 6.2.2. Recorded pleasant odors: Assessment method: A
monitoring methodology based on the OdourCollect app [13]—grounded in citizen
science—has been defined; it allows odors to be recorded in four clicks (1.
Location, 2. Odor type, 3. Hedonic tone, 4. Intensity).
Needed equipment
To make the
collected results and data available to the entire citizenry, a methodology for
sharing and connecting with existing city-level digital platforms is being
designed and implemented.
