Strengthening Public Engagement in Research: Evidence, Impact, and Future Pathways
In collaboration with the IMPETUS and RIECS projects, ECS is organising a final policy event entitled "Strengthening Public Engagement in Research: Evidence, Impact, and Future Pathways" in Brussels. We will present engaging scenarios featuring real-life citizen science projects and share impact stories from European policymakers. These examples aim to highlight not only what has been achieved so far, but also the potential for even greater impact if support mechanisms for citizen science are strengthened. Following the presentations, there will be opportunities for networking and engaging with interactive elements over coffee and light refreshments. This event is primarily targeted at MEPs and European policymakers, but we may be able to open additional attendance spots depending on capacity. EN/GER: Wie gesund sind deine Kartoffeln? DNA-Analyse im molekularbiologischen Labor des Naturkundemuseums
English description below -DEU- Welche Kartoffelsorten sind resistent gegen Kartoffelfäule, Colletotrichum-Welkekrankheit, Silberschorf? -ENG- Which potato varieties are resistant to dry rot, black dot and silver scurf? These are the different diseases that the PataFEST project deals with. To give an insight into the world of potato research, ECSA, together with the Natural History Museum Berlin, invites potato growers to bring in their own potato leaves. You can then test them for disease resistant genes. Together with the team from the laboratory, the different stages of DNA analysis will be explained and carried out: Isolation of DNA, quantification, PCR and DNA sequencing. Curious? Then write to us at patafest@ecsa.ngo You can also register here: https://forms.monday.com/forms/b293b6583af626453f7e5c57b675a190?r=euc1 Unfortunately, people, who are pregnant, breastfeeding or under the age of 18 cannot enter the lab. We will have a separate booth in the exhibition hall of the museum accessible for everyone.
ECSA 2022 Conference: Citizen Science for Planetary Health
Why “Citizen Science for Planetary Health”? Because the health of our planet is at risk. To preserve and support the well-being of all life on Earth, we need the commitment and efforts of everyone – policy makers, the public, business, science and research. Citizen science offers effective and innovative ways to do transdisciplinary research and influence decision-making in multiple areas and ways. Citizen science is particularly suited to connect diverse fields and diverse actors in the common endeavour of collaborating in research. The concept of planetary health is based on the understanding that human health and human civilization depend on thriving natural systems and the sustainable stewardship of those natural systems. This demands not only knowledge, commitment and engagement of health and environmental sciences, but inter- and transdisciplinary efforts from all research fields and societal and political actors. The ECSA 2022 Conference invites researchers from all disciplines, civil society actors, citizen scientists, policy decision-makers and all interested in the topic in Europe and worldwide to reflect, discuss and network around the topic of “Citizen Science for Planetary Health”.
What is planetary health and why we need diverse citizen science perspectives and stakeholders to support it Let’s celebrate the World Health Day (https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-health-day) on April 7th, 13:30-14:30 (CET) with the webinar by Kim Grützmacher, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, introducing the #ECSA2022 conference from an holistic perspective. What is Planetary Health? And why we need diverse Citizen Science perspectives and stakeholders to support it? This webinar will introduce the holistic concept of Planetary Health. We aim to show that it will take diverse synergies and collaboration with the entire Citizen Science community with many scientific disciplines to implement the best of all possible futures on our human-inhabited planet. During the webinar, Kim Grützmacher will cover: - the concept and related fields of Planetary Health - the importance of planetary health in science with and for society - the importance of inter- and transdisciplinary research for achieving planetary health. Oxford|Berlin Summer School on Open Research 2021
Open research practices have the potential to revolutionise the way research methods and results are communicated, and to facilitate research collaborations and sharing of research outputs in an unprecedented manner. However, adopting these practices requires knowledge and skills that are not normally taught in undergraduate or graduate degrees. To close this gap, we offer a four-day summer school to guide early career researchers (PhD students and postdocs) towards an open, transparent, and reproducible research workflow. These topics will be embedded in a more general curriculum on research ethics and meta-research.
