Nature observation marathon invites naturalists to explore the biodiversity in their favorite area. The maraton is following format of BioBlitz, an international species recording scheme. In BioBlitz volunteers and researchers will identify as many species of animals, plants and fungi as possible in a given place in a given period of time. BioBlitz usually lasts 24 hours to observe the forms of biodiversity throughout the day. In previous years the marathon was a national event in Estonia, but in 2024 we will also invite other naturalist around Baltic Sea and in Nordic countries to join in. The main event takes place during 24 hours in 8.-9 June, but the observation areas should be registered by May 5th.
Started in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. The 2023 CNC takes place in two parts: 1. Taking pictures of wild plants and animals: April 28 – May 1, 2023 2. Identifying what was found: May 2 – May 7, 2023 Results will be announced on Monday May 8, 2023.
Nature is vitally important, and nature is in trouble, but we can all help with nature’s recovery by helping fill in the gaps in what we know about the species on our doorsteps. By looking out for wildlife in your own neighbourhood, you can support vital conservation research whilst connecting with nature and enjoying the outdoors. That is why this September, researchers, school groups, citizens and wildlife enthusiasts across the continent are coming together in a race against the clock to put nature on the map, submitting photos and observations of wildlife in their neighbourhoods through the free, easy to use iNaturalist mobile phone app. Join an epic race for wildlife this September as citizens across Europe take part in the worlds’ first 48 hour continental BioBlitz!
From the 1st of June until the 30th of September, the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona will participate in a Bioblitz called "BioMARató". The region that gets the most underwater observations, detects more invasive and rare species or gets the most participants will win. This event is part of the City Nature Challenge (CNC), an international friendly competition of naturalistic observations where cities worldwide will compete with each other. The “BioBlitz a tutti i costi” is a free event open to everyone, to learn to recognize living species present in nature and to collect original scientific data, useful for conservation. Through the iNaturalist app, you can send photos of animal and plant species (not domestic) that you took outdoors or in one of the participating National Parks. If you can't leave home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, you can upload photos from your archives. As in a real BioBlitz (which usually lasts 24 hours and is held outdoors), the "BioBlitz a tutti i costi " will produce a list of species thanks to the collaboration between citizens and experts who will help you in identifications.
