Citizen Science has the power to deliver major change in the way the EU Green Deal objectives are delivered. If we can get just 15% of the population of Europe engaged to tackle behavioural change issues through citizen science nearly 70 million people would be driving change on issues such as air quality, climate change and sustainable lifestyles. Come and learn about the cutting-edge research that is seeking to make this possible. The event will have a speaker from the UNEP as well as presentations from 7 Green Deal Call projects on their work across the EU: AURORA, I-CHANGE, SOCIO-BEE, COMPAIR, ECF4CLIM, GreenSCENT and PSLifestyle. The event will be of particular interest to policy makers, researchers and others interested in finding out more from forefront of climate change research and innovation.
Join the NEWSERA final conference in Brussels – or follow the livestream – on March 29th 2023 to learn about the project’s journey and results, and join the conversation around citizen science communication and citizen science journalism. During the event, hosted at the “BIP Meeting Centre”, the NEWSERA Consortium members will discuss the achievements of the project and present the NEWSERA Blueprints on innovative citizen science communication. These documents are the results of the many learnings of the #CitSciComm Labs and will be presented with the participation of representatives from the NEWSERA Pilots. Moreover, the NEWSERA final conference will be an occasion to go deeper into the concepts of citizen science communication and citizen science journalism, and will feature the participation of fellow EU-funded projects ENJOI, COALESCE, IMPETUS, and ECS. After the event, participants are invited to visit the DATA4CitSciNews exhibition at 7PM, which was first launched in Barcelona in November 2022. Hosted in the impressive venue “Au Bassin”, the exhibition will showcases several artworks to set off the concept of citizen science journalism, through alternative visuals, installations and critical narratives. The exhibition aims to spark a discussion about how citizens and journalists and well designed data collection can be the drivers behind investigation to ultimately respond to societal needs and benefit communities.
Europe is home of major world class research infrastructures which are crucial enablers of research and technological innovation and drivers of multidisciplinary and data-intensive science. Such research infrastructures can also play a key role in eliminating anti-intellectual beliefs in society and providing citizens with the intellectual ammunition needed to become critical consumers of scientific knowledge. This can be done by creating a well-functioning ecosystem that allows new forms of co-creation between professional researchers and citizen scientists by empowering the latter not only with access to research outputs but also to take part in the process of scientific discovery producing high-quality data and adding to the scientific knowledge. In that regard, it is of utmost important to rethink policies to make research infrastructures a key player in citizen science through a consistent involvement of citizens making a genuine and valued contribution to managing the data avalanche.
Webinar: Blueprint for reducing plastic pollution in rivers through citizen science
Rivers are critical to all life on the planet. They are a source of drinking water and a vital ecosystem for many species. Clean rivers are key. In most recent years, it becomes clear that our rivers are polluted with plastics. Scientific evidence shows that these polluted rivers also contribute to the worldwide plastic pollution of our oceans. In this webinar, we will present the blueprint of our Clean Rivers project and explain how to set a project that focusses on tackling river litter pollution. The program will be interactive to share experiences, knowledge and future collaborations. The program is targeted at non-governmental organisations, policy makers and advisors at European, regional and local level, politicians, waterboards, institutes, universities and companies. Join us for plastic free rivers in 2030!
ECSA & EU-Citizen.Science webinar: Introducing new citizen science projects launching in 2021
Our webinar on the 26th May 2021 (14.00-15.30 CEST) will highlight new citizen science projects starting in 2021, with short talks from three early career researchers: – Famke Mölenberg (she/her/hers) (Erasmus MC, Netherlands) is an epidemiologist working on SEEDS, which aims to engage teenagers from Spain, the Netherlands, Greece and the United Kingdom in their health education and science literacy by directly empowering through citizen science. She tweets as @FamkeMolenberg. – Dr Cristina Zaga (she/her/hers) (University of Twente, Netherlands) is assistant professor in human-centred design working on Incentive, which links project partners and citizen science to co-create sustainable transdisciplinary hubs for stimulating and supporting excellent citizen science and responsible research and innovation (RRI). She tweets as @Zaga_daga. – Isabelle Freiling (she/her/hers) (University of Vienna, Austria) is a communication scientist working in the YouCount project, which aims to identify positive drivers for social inclusion of youth at risk of exclusion, and cocreate innovations and policymaking using cocreative youth citizen social science. She tweets as @isa_freiling. The webinar will finish with a Q&A and discussion. The event will be in English with a live transcript and you can register for free via the website.
Art Pluriverse: A Community Science Series
The Biennale of Western Balkans opens a month-long online programme of collective actions for intangible cultural heritage and open knowledge. The programme focuses on empowering communities of practice in the Balkan region, documenting their cultural knowledge in cooperative, ethical and accessible ways. The 1st edition aims to uplift local knowledge and intangible cultural practices related to textiles, through the development of FAIR community archives and research-based art creation. Share the open calls and join as a partner.
