A celebration of the ECS archipelago | Bringing citizen science to public libraries

As the European Citizen Science (ECS) project enters its final year, we are celebrating our achievements through a distributed series of events across Europe. Organised in collaboration with the Slovenian Citizen Science Network and Public Libraries, and as part of the ECS final event series, A celebration of the ECS archipelago, we are organising a day of collaboration and capacity building. This event focuses on the journey through the development of the ECS digital meeting point, the citizenscience.eu, showcases citizen science impact stories, delivers training on citizen science and highlights the importance of public libraries in creating community and enhancing scientific literacy. Attendance at the event is free, but as places are limited, participation is by invitation.

Citizen Science Festival in Oulu

On 6 March 2026, from 17:00 – 20:00, the University of Oulu, the European Citizen Science (ECS) project and the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA), will host the Citizen Science Festival in Oulu’s Valkea shopping mall. This event, free of charge and open to the public, is organised as part of the ECSA2026 conference which takes place from 3-6 March 2026 and as part of the ECS final event series: A celebration of the ECS archipelago. The festival will be open to the public and designed to bring citizen science directly into the heart of Oulu and into the daily lives of its people. The festival is about sharing the joy and impact of citizen science initiatives with everyone.

Living Danube Challenge - Ignite NEB Event 2025

Changemakers ignite nature stewardship in the Danube River Basin. Are you a changemaker eager to apply citizen-led, nature-based solutions to local challenges in the Danube River Basin? And do you want to pitch for a 10k-valued development trajectory to transform your idea into a real business or initiative? Join us for DANUBE4All x EIT Community NEB’s Living Danube Challenge! The Living Danube Challenge is a free innovation launchpad for emerging changemakers ready to restore and protect the Danube River Basin through nature-based solutions and citizen-led action. Co-produced by EIT’s Ignite NEB Programme, DANUBE4all, PULSAQUA, and ZSI, the program includes: ️- A dynamic series of three online trainings (17:00-18:00 CET on Wednesdays, September 17, 24, and October 1) on nature-based solutions, citizen science, and social business strategy - A two-day in-person ideation sprint at BOKU University’s River Lab in Vienna (October 10-11 2025) with workshops & arts programming - A pitch process towards an 8-month, 10k-valued development trajectory to bring 3 winning ideas to life. ECS Collaboration Session - Advocacy in CS

Are you involved in citizen science projects or networks? The ECS Collaboration Sessions give you a platform to learn about different citizen science projects, exchange insights about key topics and competencies in CS, and share updates on your own work with a wide range of CS professionals. The ECS project is organising Collaboration Sessions once every two months. In these online Sessions, CS practitioners have the floor to host presentations, activities, and learning moments for the benefit of the European citizen science community. Do you want to learn about ongoing projects and specific competencies that can boost your own work? You are welcome join and participate in these sessions. YouCount: Save the dates for Final Conference 4-5 December 2023

Youth Citizen Social Science contributing to social inclusion How can we shape an inclusive society for young people at risk of exclusion in Europe? What role can Citizen Science play in this endeavour? The Horizon 2020 research and innovation project YouCount explored these questions through co-creative research with youth and local stakeholders in nine countries across ten cases. After two years of hands-on Youth Citizen Social Science work, YouCount will share experiences and look ahead to discuss findings and potential impacts on EU policies and beyond. Program: The first day includes a seminar focusing on hands-on Youth Citizen Social Science and a welcome reception. The final conference takes place on the second day where we will discuss implications of key findings with stakeholders and policymakers. On both days, the voices of our young co-researchers will be amplified during presentations, interactive sessions, round table discussions and an exhibition. #TranskriBUWmaraton is an event from 3 to 30 April 2023 as part of the Citizen Science Month celebrations. All interested readers and supporters of University of Warsaw Library will have the opportunity to cooperate in discovering, reading and transcribing historical handwritten documents, within a dedicated group on the FB profile of the University of Warsaw Library. This time we invited our colleagues from faculty libraries to cooperate. Especially for this occasion they chose interesting, rare and often surprising materials. Among them there are marginalia of one of the most eccentric Polish artists, handwritten maps, certificates labeling unique geological specimens and descriptions of plants from the so-called Hundred-year-old Herbarium. Together, we will try to unravel one of the unexplained mysteries of the Second World War, hidden in an encrypted and unread document from the collection of the Manuscripts Department of the University of Warsaw Library. And this is just a small part of what awaits you this year! We invite the entire academic community and all interested parties - both amateurs and specialists in their fields - to help in making historical sources more accessible and useful. As part of the project, for four weeks in April, we will be posting scans of selected handwritten documents on the TranskriBUW Facebook group. The task consist in reading and rewriting the text of the documents as precisely as possible and publishing the prepared transcripts in the comments section. The correctness of all prepared transcripts will be verified by University of Warsaw Library employees, who will further decide to link them to the scans of manuscripts placed in the Crispa. Digital Library of the University of Warsaw (https://crispa.uw.edu.pl/). Transcriptions will improve the readability as well as facilitate search and access to these handwritten documents. Everyone will be able to use them freely. The language of the event is Polish.

Science communication in CS projects – strategies, and tools

During this interactive webinar, members of the CS Track team will share strategies for science communication in citizen science projects, provide an overview of relevant software and resources, and help participants explore an easy-to-use free data visualization tool. Online Course on Management of Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas

If you are a post graduate student, young scientist, member of a MAB Youth Group, educator or manager working on Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas, then, this online course is for you! The course is the virtual part of the 2021 Asterousia Hybrid University on Management of Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas, and will run from 10 January to 6 February 2022. The course in a nutshell : DURATION: Four weeks, starting from 10 January to 6 February 2022. FORMAT: It combines asynchronous (self-paced) and synchronous sessions (weekly live meetings). COMMITTMENT: The total training time for learners is approx. 20 hours (~5 hours/week). PARTICIPANTS: MAB Youth Group members, Post-Graduate Students, Young Scientists, Educators and Managers of Biosphere Reserves and other designated areas, with a priority to be given to applicants from European and Mediterranean countries. Webinar & Workshop "Copernicus: Europe's Satellite Data for Our Own Climate"

The event offers participants a first insight into the Earth Observation System "Copernicus" and the broad application possibilities of the openly available data. Copernicus offers freely accessible services in various fields, which among other things directly contribute to the monitoring of climate change. In addition, a limited number of participants will have the opportunity to get to know and use the Sen2Cube.at toolbox of the University of Salzburg in a professionally guided workshop. Sen2cube supports the image analysis of satellite data of user-defined regions and intervals. By means of an example it will be shown how these data can be used for own research. What’s new in citizen science training: from open science to public engagement

EU-Citizen.Science contains a wide array of free, self-directed training modules on citizen science on its Moodle page. The themes of the training modules range from introduction to citizen science over research design and methods, engagement and impact to communication and regulations and ethics. At this event, we will showcase three of these training modules and offer the opportunity to meet the trainers who developed them. We will launch the final version of the EU-Citizen.Science platform and show its new features. Finally, the winners of the #MonthOfTheProjects campaign will be presented.

The day will be divided into three parts. First, an introductory table that will bring together international experts related to open science and the sustainable development goals.
