European Citizen Science (ECS)

The European Citizen Science (ECS) project was an HORIZON project active from 1 August 2022 till 31 July 2026. The core aim was to build on the momentum and citizen science’s major success story within FP7 and Horizon 2020 to integrate citizen science within current and future research and innovation efforts, making citizen science an integral part of the European Research Area (ERA) and positioning Europe as a leader in citizen science.

Building on the achievements of previous EU-funded projects, including eu-citizen.science and Cos4Cloud, as well as on the important progress made by the citizen science community in previous years, ECS has helped to strengthen the European citizen science landscape through a combination of shared infrastructure, training, networks, collaboration and capacity building activities. ECS has promoted inclusion and diversity through its activities, events, networks and collaborations. This work has supported a broader understanding of participation in citizen science and has helped create opportunities for different actors and communities. Aim

The work on the ECS project was developed around 6 main objectives.

O1: Empower the European citizen science community through co-design and co-creation

O2: Strengthen the links and collaboration between existing citizen science initiatives

O3: Increase the participation of citizens from all walks of life in citizen science through an inclusive approach

O4: Build the capacity to conduct excellent research and innovation through citizen science

O5: Raise awareness, support and mainstream citizen science among new actors, new territories and scientific fields

O6: Better align data infrastructures to the needs of citizen science, and improve open science practices employed by citizen science initiatives

As a consortium we all worked together with the citizen science community to widen and strengthen the European Citizen Science community through capacity building and awareness raising activities all towards a shared vision of a globally connected, inclusive and strong citizen science community for societal change in Europe.
