Refuxios: Creation of a Blue Bio-Inclusive Refuge Area
Refuxios transformed an abandoned schoolyard area into a bio-inclusive freshwater refuge with a pond, shelters and willow planting. Designed and built by students through Biology, Art and Technology, the project involved families, exchanges, workshops and exhibitions, and inspired three other Galician schools to create their own ponds.
Aim
The project aimed to create a living freshwater habitat that would increase biodiversity and inclusion beyond the human community. It sought to use Project-Based Learning to connect ecosystem science, art, technology, mathematics and sustainable craft. A further aim was to turn the schoolyard into a permanent outdoor classroom and share pond-based teaching approaches with other schools.
