EFU - Efu System (Human Flux Unit)
EFU (Human Flux Unit) is a biophysical accounting framework that measures environmental and material flows using a human-metabolic base unit (1 EFU = 20 kg/day/person material flux) instead of monetary proxies. Calibrated against 28+ years of data from a closed-loop regenerative farm in Hungary, the system models material balances, groundwater flows, and early-warning indicators across regional and national scales. We are seeking academic collaborators in biophysics, environmental science, and citizen science methodology to help validate and extend the framework.
Aim
The goal of the EFU project is twofold: (1) to achieve academic validation of the framework’s biophysical foundations — particularly the human-metabolic base unit and its scaling to regional/national material flux models — through collaboration with researchers in biophysics and environmental science; and (2) to build a citizen-science-compatible methodology for collecting and contributing real-world calibration data (e.g. from farms, water systems, and local environmental monitoring), so the framework can be tested and refined by a wider community beyond its original author.
