From Backyard to Space: Family Citizen Science

Active

from 24/06/2026

A pioneering, family-led citizen science project originating from rural Igarassu, Pernambuco, Brazil, conceived by school-aged researchers. The initiative demonstrates how families can drive the collection of high-quality ecological and geospatial data directly from their surroundings. The project breaks economic barriers by integrating high-resolution aerial mapping from drone photogrammetry (GeoNadir) with ground-level biodiversity monitoring (iNaturalist) and satellite validation protocols (NASA's GLOBE Observer), creating a scalable and replicable framework for global environmental tracking.

Aim

To empower citizens and families worldwide to conduct high-precision citizen science using their own everyday devices. The project aims to democratize access to advanced aerospace and ecological tools, train local communities in standardized environmental data collection, and directly combat critical baseline data gaps in rural and peripheral territories, turning local observations into vital pieces of international climate and biodiversity databases.

How to participate

Participants can choose between three open tracks depending on their age and equipment: 1) Ecological Track (All ages): Download the iNaturalist app to photograph and log local flora and fauna. 2) Space Validation Track (All ages): Download NASA's GLOBE Observer app, connect it to SciStarter, and join our global family team using Code: GLIDBMRI to log environmental data during satellite flyovers. 3) Geospatial Track (Adults 18+): Drone pilots can conduct standardized aerial mapping at 40m altitude and upload datasets to our public GeoNadir workspace.

Needed equipment

A smartphone or tablet with internet access and a camera is required for biodiversity logging (iNaturalist) and atmospheric validation (NASA GLOBE Observer). For advanced geospatial mapping tracks, a remote-controlled drone with interval-shooting capabilities is recommended but entirely optional.
