Independent Family Scientists (CFI)

The Independent Family Scientists (CFI) is a family-based social innovation collective originating from the rural area of Igarassu, Pernambuco, Brazil. The collective operates in strategic governance, public communication of science, and regulatory compliance for citizen science initiatives led by young school-aged researchers. CFI drives the international project 'From Backyard to Space: Family Citizen Science', mapped as a social technology in the urban periphery category by the National Espalha Collection (2026) and officially affiliated with the global SciStarter platform. The collective breaks technical and economic barriers by integrating open geospatial and ecological tools (iNaturalist, GeoNadir, and NASA GLOBE Observer) to foster inclusive digital accessibility. A core mission of CFI is to deploy community-led research in rural areas of Igarassu that completely lack baseline biodiversity or cartographic records, effectively filling these critical data gaps. The ecosystem operates as an official data provider integrated into Brazil's national infrastructure (SiBBr) and the global GBIF network, contributing high-precision biological metadata to advance climate science and environmental conservation.
