Snail Hunt - Igarassu/PE
from 29/07/2026
A public utility and collective health initiative derived from the 'From Backyard to Space' ecosystem, coordinated by the Independent Family Scientists (CFI) collective in Igarassu, Pernambuco, Brazil. Developed in response to municipal sanitary alerts, this citizen science campaign targets the invasive Giant African Snail (Lissachatina fulica), a dangerous vector for zoonoses such as eosinophilic meningitis. The project empowers local citizens to perform risk-free georeferenced photographic monitoring using the iNaturalist app, converting community observations into high-precision digital maps for public health intelligence.
Aim
To build a real-time cartographic database of invasive snail hotspots to support environmental surveillance and cleanup drives in Igarassu. The project aims to mitigate public health risks by mapping vector proliferation areas, engaging the community in neighborhood health safety, and training citizens to utilize mobile technology to protect local biodiversity and prevent disease outbreaks.
How to participate
Activity for adults or children under strict parental supervision. 1) Download the free iNaturalist app and create an account. 2) When inspecting your backyard or neighborhood in Igarassu, if you spot a Giant African Snail, keep a safe distance and never touch the animal without gloves. 3) The responsible adult must open the app, snap a clear photo of the mollusk, and submit the observation. The system will automatically map the location for public health mapping.
Needed equipment
A smartphone or tablet with internet access, a built-in camera, and GPS enabled to capture the georeferenced photo via the iNaturalist app. Safety equipment such as protective disposable gloves is mandatory if any community-led management occurs, though visual tracking from a safe distance is strongly recommended.
