CitieS-Health

Completed

from 01/01/2019 until 30/06/2022

CitieS-Health aimed to put citizens’ concerns at the heart of research agenda on environmental epidemiology by tackling health issues that concern them.

Citizens along with scientists in five cities in Europe co-designed and implemented epidemiological studies to explore how their living environment is affecting their health.

The project co-created an interactive toolkit.eu with customised tools and best practices for the replication of the studies in other locations by researchers, individuals and citizen groups.

Aim

The primary objective of the CitieS-Health project is to place citizens' real-world concerns at the core of environmental epidemiology research by co-designing and implementing local health studies.

Core Objectives
• Prioritize Citizen Concerns: Put community worries about local living environments and health directly into the research agenda.
• Co-Create Studies: Enable residents and scientists in five European pilot cities (Barcelona, Kaunas, Ljubljana, Amsterdam, and Lucca) to jointly design protocols, collect and analyze data, and communicate findings.
• Study Environmental Links: Assess local exposures—such as air and noise pollution, mobility, and urban design—and link them directly to local health impacts like mental health or cognitive performance.
• Develop an Interactive Toolkit: Build an open-access toolkit featuring customized tools and best practices so researchers and citizen groups can replicate these studies anywhere.
• Establish Governance Principles: Formulate procedures and guidelines that give participants control over their project data and outcomes.
